Chelsea FC defender Gary Cahill has spoken of his pride at captaining England for the first time during the international break, while also acknowledging that the Blues will have to make their own luck and improve performances to get back on track.
The 29-year-old returned to training at the club’s base at Cobham earlier than expected, with a back problem, but is expected to be fit enough to face his former club Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon.

The Chelsea FC centre-back has expressed his determination to put things right at the club in order to get a worryingly poor season back on track before it is too late. Cahill was quoted by ESPN FC as saying:
“Luck’s not on our side at the minute, but you have to make your own luck in terms of performances at the club.

“That’s something I’m determined to put right and I’m sure everyone else is. It’s not a nice feeling at the minute and one we don’t want to have for very much longer.”
Cahill also expressed his pride at captaining England for the first time in their qualifier against Estonia at Wembley.
“It was an amazing feeling for me and my family and a moment I’ll never ever forget,” Cahill said. “But once I knew I was captain I wanted to make it work and to lead them to a positive result and thankfully it went that way.
“I thought I played well, and the team played well. The most important thing was that we won so a good night.”

Although it appeared as though Gary Cahill would be phased out of the side with the emergence of France youngster Kurt Zouma, Chelsea FC captain John Terry’s uncertain form has meant that Cahill has been a constant at the back for the Blues this season.
That is unlikely to change throughout the course of the campaign, given manager Jos Mourinho’s decision to play a relatively high line, which doesn’t suit a slow, ageing Terry. The injury to Branislav Ivanovi will likely force a defensive reshuffle this weekend against Aston Villa, but irrespective of who Mourinho chooses as right-back for the game — or indeed the rest of the season — it looks very much like Cahill will be a constant at centre-back.
