Looking at the Premier League table from the season gone by, a man who wakes up from a coma would find getting excited a bit difficult as Chelsea were so far ahead of everyone else. Whata s more, even the player and the manager of the season came from Chelsea, making more of a case for the same. Yet, there were several subplots to the league that the table just cana t express. The table might not lie, but it certainly makes the league look far too dull.
Of course, there was only one team that was worthy of being champions, but the others definitely played their part in making it a lot more interesting than to looks on paper. Here are the yeara s most memorable moments.
Goals Galore at Goodison
While Arsenal fans continue to sing a Boring Boring Chelseaa , the Blues were anything but this season. A case in point was their performance at Everton in only the third game of the season. The a boringa team scored only six goals, while Roberto Martineza entertaining side scored three. The game was an advert for the premier league as it swung back and forth, finally going the Bluesa way with summer signing Diego Costa scoring a two goals, one of which came after a brilliant combination of play which involved Cesc Fabregas and Costa.
The duo proved decisive in driving Mourinhoa s side to the Premier League title as Fabregas assisted 20 goals while Costa scored 20.
Leicestera s 5-3 win over United
As the transfer window came to a close, Manchester United suddenly had a completely new squad. The likes of Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao were added as United splurged in excess of A?150m to bounce back from a disastrous season under David Moyes. Louis van Gaala s side had played some top football on their way to a 4-0 rout of QPR the previous week as Di Maria and Ander Herrera, another summer signing, got on the scoreboard. At newly promoted Leicester City, United started brilliantly again, scoring with their first attack as Falcao teed up a delicious cross for Robin van Persie who nodded in with ease. It was then Di Mariaa s turn to get on the scoreboard and the Argentine came up with a sensational effort, chipping the goal keeper after a breathtaking run. United looked unstoppable at the time and were 3-1 when Herrera scored in the 57th minute. The Foxes, however, had other plans as they fought back, scoring four goals in the next 20 minutes, showcasing the kind of resilience that saw them fight back from the bottom of the table to finish 14th in the end.
Southamptona s 8-0 win over Sunderland
Having sold most of their star players from the previous campaign and under a new manager, Southampton were widely tipped for relegation. Ronald Koeman, who in another season could have won the manager of the year award, replenished the squad with some lesser known players from across Europe. Koemana s work paid rich dividends almost immediately as The Saints notched up 14 points in the first 8 games and were third in the table just a point behind champions Manchester City. The last three points came in a spectacular 8-0 drubbing of Sunderland a a performance that saw one of Koemana s astute signings, Graziano Pelle, grab a brace.
Arsene Wenger loses his cool against Jose
Usually so calm and composed, Arsene Wenger has never quite been able to deal with Jose Mourinho that way. The Portuguese tends to get under Wengera s nerve and that seemed to be the case this year again. So frustrated was the Arsenal manager that he actually went to Josea s technical area and shoved him catching him off guard. Wenger has been involved in altercations such as it in the past, but considering the rivalry between these two, it was a particularly a speciala moment.
Harry Kane inspires Spurs to 5-3 win over Chelsea
While ita s not often you see Chelsea lose to Tottenham Hotspur, ita s even rarer that you see a Jose Mourinho side score three goals and still get beaten. On New Yeara s Day, however, a Harry Kane inspired Spurs side overwhelmed a Chelsea team that actually went into a lead at White Hart Lane. Kane, who later won the PFA Young Player of the Year award, scored two goals and won a penalty, helping Mauricio Pochettinoa s side to a memorable 5-3 win.
Arsenala s 0-2 win over City at Etihad
Often criticized for being too immature and predictable, Arsene Wenger pulled a rabbit out of the hat as he and his Arsenal team went to the Etihad Stadium looking to put men behind the ball and hit champions City on the counter. As City toiled against a focused Arsenal side, the Gunners took their chance at the other end through a Santi Carzorla penalty and an Olivier Giroud header from a freekick. Wengera s men eventually finished third in the table, defeating Liverpool convincingly at home and pushing Chelsea to the brink of defeat. Their campaign also included a hard fought draw at Old Trafford in a crucial game towards the end of the season.
Gerrarda s 38 sec cameo against United
Having announced his plans to leave Liverpool earlier in the season, Reds Captain Steven Gerrard knew it would be the last time he faced fierce rivals Manchester United when the Red Devils visited Anfield in March. What was supposed to be a fairytale ending, turned out to be an absolute nightmare as the former England captain was relegated to the bench for the game. After watching his team struggle to get going against an in-form United side who were not only in control of the game but were ahead 0-1, Brendan Rodgers decided it was time to call on Captain fantastic. Eager to produce yet another special moment for the Kop, Gerrard let emotions get the better of him, as he was sent off for a stamp on Ander Herrera only 38 seconds after he was thrown on. Liverpool ended up losing the game 1-2, as Juan Mata scored to superb goals for the Red Devils, putting some distance between the two traditional giants of English football.
Younga s Man of the Match Performance against City
After losing the last four Manchester derbies to a noisy neighboursa City, United came into the Aprila s clash at Old Trafford knowing that nothing less than a win would do. United also happened to be on a five game winning run a a run that included comprehensive wins over Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool. In those five games, forgotten winger Ashley Young had suddenly came to the fore and put in some sizzling performances on the left wing, so much so that he had kept out record signing Angel Di Maria. The former Aston Villa man was brilliant yet once more in a memorable 4-2 win at home for Van Gaala s men, scoring one goal while setting up another for Marouane Fellaini. Fellaini happened to be another United outcast who found a place in Van Gaala s team after some solid performances throughout the season.
Classy Gesture from Chelsea Fans

Not often do you see opposition fans rise in a unanimous applause for rival teama s captain. It was heartening to see every spectator inside Stamford Bridge stand up to salute Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard who was playing in West London for the last time. The Blues supporters deserve enormous credit for it as if there was one player in English football who deserved such a send off it had to be Gerrard. What was rather disappointing, however, was Gerrarda s childish swipe at those same fans following the game.
