Aston Villa 2-1 Liverpool: We Were Second Best Today, Says Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers - Liverpool manager

Aston Villa defeated Liverpool in the FA Cup Semi-Final to set up a final against Arsenal. Brendan Rodgers was critical about his teama s performance and admitted that the better team won.

Liverpool started the FA Cup semi-final on a positive note as the Reds took the lead through Coutinho in the 30th minute. Then onwards it all went down for the Merseyside club as Aston Villa clinched an equaliser in just six minutes through Christian Benteke.

Just nine minutes in the second half was all that Villa needed to score the winner and seal their passage to the finals. Captain Fabian Delph grabbed the winner to ensure that Liverpoola s season will end without any silverware.

This was Gerrarda s last game at Wembley and the Liverpool legend will be ending his long-term romance with the club on a disappointing note.

Liverpool manager, Brendan Rodgers, was critical about his sidea s performance and he had to admit that the better side won. He maintained that he would have hoped for a better game and said that Liverpool was the second best side on the day.

Rodgers said: a As you can imagine, we’re obviously bitterly disappointed, and more with the performance,

a You can always lose a game, but you’d hope you can play well and give yourself an opportunity. I thought we were second best today, to be honest. They were better than us. We had some chances but Aston Villa were better than us today.a

Liverpool entered the semi-finals of both cup competitions and ended up on the losing side on both instances. That has left Liverpool with no chance of winning any silverware and now they only have to fight for the fourth spot in the Premier League.

The Liverpool manager contemplated the Redsa season so far and said: a It has been a mixture really. The start of the season was not so good and there were various reasons behind that.

a In the middle of the season we picked up and were playing very, very well and winning games, with great rhythm and flow to our game. In the last block of games, the performance level hasn’t been what we would like.

a We have reached two semi-finals; we need to have the courage and bravery now to play better in those games and the big games. We didn’t play well enough today.

a In the remaining games, we’ll have to fight in every single game. Of course, there’ll be disappointment in the next couple of days, but we now have to get ready for our next league game.a
