Arsenal Ponder A?12m Swoop Of Manchester United Defender Chris Smalling

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger plans to sign at least two world class defenders in the summer transfer window and one of them could be Manchester Uniteda s Chris Smalling.

After failing to qualify for Europe in 2014, Manchester United changed the face of their squad last summer. But, Louis van Gaal is still not happy with the squad he has inherited from David Moyes at Manchester United and he has convinced the club management to once again splash the cash on new talent in the summer of 2015.

First priority of Louis van Gaal for the upcoming transfer window is going to be acquisition of at least two more world class defenders. And to make a room for them, Manchester United might decide to get rid of their existing defenders and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that he could take advantage of this situation and lure Chris Smalling away from Red Devils in coming July.

Arsenal signed Gabriel from La Liga side Villarreal in January for around 13 million pounds but Arsene Wenger is still interested in signing a top notch central defender. The Frenchman is a long term admirer of Manchester Uniteda s Chris Smalling as he even tried to sign the Englishman in 2010 from Fulham for 10 million pounds.

Manchester United succeeded in getting Chris Smalling at the expense of Arsenal in 2010 but the defender has failed to prove his real worth at the Old Trafford club so far.

Chris Smalling has made 18 appearances for Manchester United this season and he is now becoming a regular starter for Red Devils under Louis van Gaal. Another thing which goes in Arsenala s favour in their pursuit of Chris Smalling is his contract situation at Manchester United. His deal at Manchester United expires in 2017, and talks of extending the same have not started yet.

Manchester United management plans to offer Chris Smalling an extension but Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that he could take the benefit of this situation of the player and lure him at the Emirates Stadium by offering a lucrative deal.

Meanwhile, reports coming from England have also confirmed the plans of Arsenal for Chris Smalling.

Daily Mirror has claimed in its story today that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is considering trying to take advantage of Smallinga s situation by making a summer bid for the versatile defender.
