Arsenal FC Fans Thank Karma As Robin Van Persie’s Own Goal Ends The Dutch Euro Dream [Tweets]

Robin van Persie scored a comical own goal as Netherlands crashed out of Euro 2016 after failing to make it into the top 3 of their group. They finished five points behind third placed Turkey – who gained automatic qualification by virtue of being the best third-placed team.

The former Arsenal FC and Manchester United striker came on as a substitute with the Dutch trailing by two goals, but instead of helping his team reduce the deficit against 10-men Czech Republic, the 32-year-old headed calmly into his team’s net. The striker did atone for his glaring mistake by scoring on the correct end, but it was not enough to save the sinking Dutch side.

Arsenal FC fans, known to be one of the most notorious on social networking sites, could not let the opportunity go and mocked the Dutchman on his team’s failure to make it to the Euros. Rubbing salt on Persie’s wounds has become the raison d’etre of some of the Gooners ever since the Dutchman swapped Old Trafford for the Emirates. While van Persie did lift the Premier League title in his first season with Manchester United, his career has nosedived since.

The striker is currently struggling to get into the first team of Turkish side Fenerbahce and Arsenal FC fans leave no opportunity to rub it into the Dutchman, whenever he fails.
