Commenting on the death of a 23 year old laborer who fell from a height of eight feet while installing temporary bleachers at the Arena Corinthians Sao Paulo-the scene of the opening of the World, Pele said that it “is a normal thing in life. It was an accident, nothing scary”Ai??said ‘O Rei’ at a press conference in Sao Paulo.
According to Pele, accidents in the stadiums are not, in his view, ai???the main threatai??? to the success of the World Cup in Brazil: “My main concern is about the infrastructure, airports,” said Athlete of the Century.
“I went to Russia, China, Europe, and all say they want to see the Cup but came yesterday and the airport was chaotic missing two months to the Cup This is my concern.. Ruin this opportunity that we have an opportunity but things are not read. ” lamented the God of Football.
The former footballer also raised his concern that Brazil has not used the World Cup to attract more tourists: “Unfortunately, we have this opportunity and we are not using to make propaganda for tourism.”
This accident comes about four months after two workers died when a crane collapsed at the stadium while hoisting a 500-tonne piece of roofing.
It was the eighth death at World Cup venues so far, the seventh in accidents. Three workers died in the Arena da Amazonia in the jungle city of Manaus, including a 55-year-old Portuguese man killed while disassembling a crane that was used to install the stadium’s roof earlier this year. Another worker there died of a heart attack.
In 2012, a worker died at the construction site of the stadium in the nation’s capital, Brasilia. Construction was already behind schedule in Sao Paulo because of the damage caused by the earlier accident in late November, when the roofing structure fell on part of the stadium’s facade.
Even though Pele is not ai???seriousai??? about the accidents taking place at regular interval, FIFA is seemingly concerned about the same. FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said on his Twitter account that he was “deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a worker”.
FIFA and the local World Cup organising committee said in a statement that they were waiting for the official report on the death.
“For FIFA, the LOC and the Brazilian authorities safety is paramount,” the statement said.
