Manchester United have seen promising signs of change under Louis van Gaal. Could they go back to being one of the most feared teams in European football?
Manchester United fans knew it would be hard after Sir Alex Ferguson left, but not this hard. Dropping from first to eighth in one season, going without a trophy and seeing bitter rivals Liverpool finish in front of them for the first time since 2002, and as if it couldnai??i??t get any worse, their ai???noisy neighbors,ai??? brought home their second Premier League title in three years.
After the firing of Moyes, the world waited to see whom the Glazers would bring in as their next manager. After Louis van Gaal was appointed, it was considered the ai???start of a new era.ai??? He promised to give the players ai???honest chances,ai??? and insisted no transfer decisions would be made until after the pre-season tour. With United winning all four games en route to the International Champions Cup title win against rivals Liverpool, the question had changed from who Van Gaal needs to bring in, to who does he want to bring in. Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera, who have been Unitedai??i??s only two summer signings so far, were targets of David Moyes throughout last summer and January. But after the devastating 2-1 loss to Swansea on the opening day of the season, Van Gaal said their ai???confidence has been smashed.ai??? Despite the fact that United were missing three starters in Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia , Rafael, and Robin van Persie, the result was unacceptable.
ai???Shaw and Herrera were already on the list and I approved them because I liked them,ai??? said Van Gaal, and he has kept to his word of given the players chances. Players who were rarely used by David Moyes last year, such as Ashley Young, Javier ai???Chicharitoai??? Hernandez, Darren Fletcher, and Tom Cleverly, were all given run-outs by Louis van Gaal, with the latter two even captaining United.
After the success of the Van Gaalai??i??s 5-3-2 formation with Dutch in the World Cup, he brought it to United, where initially it was received with some skepticism, as many fans and pundits agreed it wasnai??i??t the traditional ai???United Way.ai??? After the last four games, though, their opinions may have changed. With Luke Shaw bombing down the left-hand side, and Antonio Valencia or Rafael down the right it was evident how attacking his formation really was.
The other new signing, Ander Herrera, has gelled into the squad magnificently; in his first game for United, he won Man of the Match with a scintillating display against the LA Galaxy as he created three of the seven United goals that night. His intricate passing was the bit of class United was missing for all of last season.
Possibly the most important aspect of the change in formation was how Juan Mata could slot back in to his more favored role right behind the strikers. Last season he was wasted under David Moyes out on the left flank, and the true brilliance that he showed under Rafael Benitez at Chelsea two seasons ago was not seen. With him supporting Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, there is no shortage of attacking options, and United should be expected to bring back the attacking prowess they showed under Sir Alex.
Still, there is obviously work that needs to be done. Adnan Januzaj came on and was Unitedai??i??s most influential player for much of the second half against Swansea, which is not only a promising sign for the youngster but also a sign that a new winger/wingback is required. Rumors have it that Van Gaal is preparing a colossal bid for Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria, or PSGai??i??s Ezequiel Lavezzi. Either of these two Argentineans would benefit United and give them some solid attacking options out wide. Even Dutch international Daley Blind would be a great addition, as the versatile defender can slot in at center-back or even function as a left wing-back.
The most important position of change for United, though, is at center-back. A team challenging for at least a Champions League place cannot have Tyler Blackett as a starting center-back ai??i?? nothing against him, but an experienced center-back is what United needs the most. Although Jurgen Klopp has ruled out a deal for Mats Hummels, there are plenty of other center-backs who Van Gaal could go after such as Medhi Benatia of Roma, Phil Jagielka of Everton, or even Benedikt HAi??wedes of Schalke 04.
Lastly, no disrespect to Darren Fletcher, but United need someone who can win the ball in the center of the park. They have the class up top, and the passing of Spaniards Mata and Herrera, but they donai??i??t have a Yaya Toure. Someone like Nigel de Jong, or ai???The Generalai??? Gennaro Gattuso could be the deciding factor in whether United can turn around this season or not. It was the role which Marouane Fellaini was brought in to fill, but his subpar performances mean another signing will most likely be necessary.
Despite the opening day loss, there have been promising signs of change from van Gaalai??i??s men and with some changes United could go back to being one of the most feared teams in European football – something all of their fans can only dream about now.
