UCL Five Things: Arsenal May Surprise Bayern Munich After Liverpool Victory

Its February again and that can only mean one thing – the return of UEFA Champions League football. The group stages of the prestigious European tournament will kick off this week with a set of exciting match ups that are sure to keep football fans across the globe glued to their TV screens at all hours of the day and night (depending on their time zones). While Tuesday would see Manchester City host Spanish giants Barcelona, Wednesday would not disappoint by any standards. English League table toppers ArsenalAi??will host German and Champions League reigning champions, Bayern Munich while Italian heavyweight AC Milan would host the highly promising Spanish club of Atletico Madrid. Time then to look at a few things we could expect to see in the fixtures on Wednesday.

1. Alex Oxdale-Chamberlain may be ready to start his first Champions League game this season

Arsenal would be buoyed by the return of their young star Alex Oxdale-Chamberlain. “The Ox” as he is fondly referred to by Gunner fans has returned in scintillating form. He followed up his brace against Cardiff City with a goal and an assist in the FA Cup game against Liverpool. While his recent return to match fitness and the fact that he played almost 70 minutes on Sunday might raise some doubts about whether he would feature so soon in the Champions League tie, Arsenal might just play him to extract the full home advantage. Most important from Arsenal’s point of view would be to win the match with as big a margin as possible without allowing Bayern Munich to score the vital away goal and Oxdale-Chamberlain would be instrumental in getting those goals up front.

2. Arsenal’s FA Cup tie against Liverpool could have been a full dress rehearsal for the Bayern game

Against Liverpool, Arsenal lined up in a compact formation flocking back to defend in numbers as well as rushing forward in attack on the break. Both of Arsenal’s goals on Sunday night were scored on the break when Liverpool had just finished attacking the home team’s goal. Arsene Wenger may wish to employ the same tactics against the visiting Germans especially when they would be missing the services of both first choice wingers, Franck Ribery and Xherdan Shaqiri, on their trip to North London. The absence of players of such quality is always felt even by the best of clubs and Bayern may be forced to play a narrower game through central midfield. Arsene Wenger is aware of this and he could pretty much start the same squad as he did on Sunday. Arsenal were in a compact formation, only breaking to score before returning to the narrow restrictive midfield game. Raheem Sterling, who’s pace showed up Per Mertesacker more than once, was largely kept out of the game as was Coutinho from the wide areas. Fewer crosses to Suarez meant he missed the few chances that did come his way. Wenger may just call for an encore of the feat from Sunday night.

3. Arsenal could pull a fast one on Bayern Munich

Arsenal will host the reigning champions in what is arguably the tastier of the two fixtures on Wednesday. Just about a week ago, Arsenal were torn apart by Liverpool at Anfield as they sank to a 5-1 defeat. Bayern Munich on the other hand are on a 21 match unbeaten run and bar the loss to Manchester City in the UEFA CL Group stages back in December, have been unbeaten for the last 40 matches starting March last year. On paper, then, it seems to be a foregone conclusion that the German juggernaut would sink the Gunners. Football matches, thankfully, are not won on paper and hence Arsene Wenger may have more to say about this result. His side showed the mental strength and confidence to go out against Liverpool again in just about a week and come out victorious at the end of their FA Cup 5th round tie thus dumping the Merseyside club out of the competition. Arsene Wenger and his men may just have enough firepower to roll over Pep Guardiola’s side when the latter visit the Emirates in two days’ time.

4. Clarence Seedorf faces his hitherto sternest test when he goes toe to toe with Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid have risen to the level this season where they are matching big boys Real Madrid and Barcelona step for step at the top of the La Liga table (even leading it for a week recently). AC Milan on the other hand have struggled to stay near the top of the Serie A. Diego Costa has been in splendid form and may prove to be more than a handful for the torn and tattered back 4 at the San Siro. Rest assured that Seedorf and his men may be in for a torrid time when the Spanish armada rolls into town. That said…

5. AC Milan will win the first leg at home

While Atletico and Milan are headed in two different directions form-wise, it would be wrong to underestimate the capability of the Rossoneri to buckle down and grind out a favourable result. European football is in the DNA of the Italian club and they know how to get the job done more often than not when it comes to Europe. Even last year, they defeated Barcelona at San Siro when CL football came calling. Add to this the fact that Atletico have subscribed to an all out attack mentality this season. While that has reaped rich benefits hitherto in the season, the chinks in the armour (read lack of squad depth) are beginning to show and the Rojiblanco are spread pretty thin right now. A few players may be feeling the effects of the high tempo season so far and may not be upto their 100% when they travel to the hallowed greens of San Siro, a fact that AC Milan are capable of exploiting to its fullest given their characteristic Italian defensive play. Mario Balotelli could well be Milan’s wildcard because the mercurial striker is capable of turning the game on its head in a moment of brilliance.
