Tottenhamai??i??s antics at the transfer market last season has made them a metaphor for wasteful spending. What will Pochettino do this season?
The only thing that has constantly changed In Tottenham more frequently that its players are the vast array of manager that have led the club to near 4th place finishes. They brought in 7 new players last season and save two (Paulinho and Eriksen) all the others failed to live up to their reputation. A sacking and reappointment of head coach as manager yielded no better result. Now Levy has brought in a new manager Mauricio Pochettino who many consider a down grade as he has been taken from a club that no doubt did well, but finished well below Spurs last season. We are yet to realize what his impact on the team would be.
Spurs need a Striker
Tottenham had one of the worst starts to their season with the misfiring Roberto Soldado brought in from Valencia for a staggering 26 Million pounds. Having scored only 6 goals even after numerous chances provide to him, Soldado soon started to be labeled as one of the flop signing of the season. With AVB losing his job and Tim Sherwood taking over the reins of the North London Club, Adebayor found a new lease of life and for an initial few matches found the back of the net more often than expected. Towards the end of the season youngster Harry Kane took up the scoring responsibility but wasn’t as impressive as everyone expected him to be.
Now at the start of a new season Spurs still stand in need of a striker and are keen on buying one before its too late. One of many Tottenham transfer targets has been the Belgian, Romelu Lukaku. Having found no place under Mourinhoai??i??s plans, Lukaku was loaned out to Everton where he made sure ai???Mouai??i?? regretted his decision. Bagging as many as 15 goals in 31 games and earning a world cup call up, Lukaku was surely one of the first names to pop up on the Spurs radar. He now has returned to Chelsea and it would be quiet a large price to pay to pry him from their hands.
Jay Rodriguez the English forwards was among the ranks of the Pochettino army at Southampton. After a newsworthy performance for the club Rodriguez was denied a world cup call up only due to his knee ligament tear. Yet to fully recover from his injury, the striker would be an asset to any team and would be keen to reunite with his former manager at Spurs for a price of around 15 Million pounds.
Arsenal is not just a rival on the pitch but off it too, and they are at it to deny Spurs from signing the QPR and French striker Loic Remy. His Impressive season at on loan at Newcastle earned him a spot in the French National team and could be bought for as little as 8 Million. Remy prefers to join Arsenal in search of Champions League football and would probably be more comfortable in the club with a French manager and few of his countrymen. However were he to join forces with his Captain (Loris) in Tottenham, he would definitely do some damage to any team Tottenham play against.
One rumor of an exit that has been circling White Hart Lane is that of Inter Milanai??i??s Interest in Roberto Soldado. Inter are set to pay as much as 15 Million for the striker who has failed to adapt to the English footballing environment and this deal just might tempt the club who are in desperate need of some funds to beat the Arsenalai??i??s bid and get Loic Remy.
Defensive Woes
Even with one of the best Goal-Keepers in the premier league Tottenham were a side with one of the lowest goal difference among the top few clubs. This is a direct reflection of how poorly their defense has performed. With no regular left-back in position, Sherwood had to juggle with an injury prone Danny Rose and out of position Jan Vertonghen, which meant the teamai??i??s best center back would play left and two slow center-halves such as Kaboul and Dawson would be employed in the middle. Utter Lack of coordination and quiet surely poor performances let them to concede more than 5 goals in at least 3 games last season.
Tottenham last season were in dire need of a regular left-back and are still in need of one. Benoit Asso-Ekotto who was their regular wing back was sent on loan to QPR and is now set to return to Spurs, however the ageing 30 year old is but a shadow of his former self and cannot be relied upon for a whole season. Ben Davies of Swansea has emerged as an apt signing for Sprus and might be Pochettinoai??i??s first signing. One rumor which comes as a shock to many Spurs faithful is the departure of Captain Michael Dawson. If rumors are to be believed he might head to Hull City for as little as 5 million pounds. Although he put up an average performance in the previous season, the loss of Dawson would definitely be a miss but would also leave Spurs short and in need of a Center- Back with only Injury prone Kaboul, Chiriches and Vertonghen to remain.
