English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur bids farewell to goal-keeper Heurelho Gomes. The Brazilian’s contract will expire next month, as he is set to depart from White Hart Lane after 6 years of service.
Tottenham Hotspur will bid farewell to their long serving goal keeper Heurelho Gomes. The Brazilian custodian, the former number 1 at Tottenham remained at White Hart Lane as a model professional throughout his contract, even after being demoted down the pecking order. He will leave the club next month after the conclusion of his six year contract.
Heurelho Gomes arrived at White Hart Lane in a record deal from PSV Eindhoven in 2008. He become the number 1 custodian soon after, even though he had some problems facing the aerial balls in Premier League. The Brazilian nicknamed as OctopusAi??soon become a crowd Favorited at White Hart Lane as he started to produce some amazing saves and his brilliance was key in Tottenham Hotspur’s revival under Harry Redknapp.
It was Heurelho Gomes brilliance under the bar that secured a top 4 finish for the North London outfit in 2009-10 season as the club qualified for UEFA Champions League for the first time. Octopus then guided the team to a historical Champions League quarter finals in 2010-11 season, which marked the arrival of a certain Gareth Bale on the global stage.
Heurelho Gomes was a part of the Brazil squad, which won the 2009 Confederations Cup. For a brief spell, Gomes become the Selecao’s number 1 custodian as well.
Brazilians fortunes didn’t last long as his weaknesses came out in the open. His inconsistencies started affecting Tottenham Hotspur results and the club brought veteran goal-keeper Brad Friedel to provide cover and competition the goal-keeper’s spot. Soon Brad Friedel become Tottenham’s number 1, and a year later France Captain Hugo Lloris arrived at White Hart Lane pushing Gomes further down the pecking order. Even though Brazilian tried to reclaim his position with a loan move to Bundelsiga outfit 1899 TSG Hoffenheim, an injury cut short his loan spell to kill off his hopes.
After returning to White Hart Lane, he remained as a model professional in the club. Even though game time was much-needed to have any hopes of a ticket to Brazil World Cup 2014, Gomes didn’t push for a move and remained loyal to the club.
The Brazilian International has played 135 games for Tottenham Hotspur during his six-year stay and played an instrumental role during his peak years. He has also made 11 appearances for Brazilian national team and is set to exit White Hart Lane as a fan’s favourite and a model professional at the end of his contract.
