Newcastle United suffer a humiliating loss at the hands of Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby.
This was a must win game for Newcastle, not only for local bragging rights, but also to keep pace with Manchester United in the race for a possible spot in the Europa League next season. However, they were thrashed 0-3 by Sunderland today at St James Park.
The result means that Newcastle remain in 8th place with 37 points, 3 points behind Manchester United, who also lost at Stoke, while Sunderland have finally climbed out of the relegation zone and are now in 14th place with 24 points.
Both sides had plenty of chances in the opening exchanges with Moussa Sissoko dragging his shot wide for Newcastle and Marcos Alonso heading over for Sunderland. The Mackems were given a penalty in the 18th minute, after Phil Bardsley was brought down in the box by Vurnon Anita. Italian striker Fabio Borini, on loan from Liverpool, made no mistake from the penalty spot.
Sunderland then found themselves 2-0 up just a few minutes later, as Adam Johnson manged to tap a rebound into the back of the net from close range.
Midway through the first half, Sunderland could have been three goals up, after Borini and Jozy Altidore linked up inside the box. Altidore worked some space for himself and fired a shot, which, however, was easily saved by Tim Krul.
Gus Poyetai??i??s side continued to pile on the pressure in the second half. Johnson weaved his way into the Newcastle box in the 65th minute and unleashed a fierce effort which cannoned off the upright. A few minutes later, Sunderland again had a chance as Sissoko was caught in possession. Altidore was able to run through on goal but goalkeeper Tim Krul managed come off his line quickly and dive at the feet of the striker to stop the chance.
Sunderlandai??i??s persistence eventually paid off as they were able to get a third, thanks to an emphatic finish by midfielder Jack Colback in the 79th minute, and sealed the game and the bragging rights.
Talking at the press conference after the game, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew talked about his disappointment at the Newcastle performance, but acknowledged that Sunderland had outplayed them. He mentioned that his side never really got going, and rued the red card of striker Loic Remy and the departure of star midfielder Johan Cabaye to PSG.
“The better team won for sure.
“Of course I am disappointed at the result and performance.
“We were not our usual selves today, perhaps we were too hyped up but everyone was giving the ball away, and that is a little unlike us and we struggled to be honest.
“Although we created chances we never really had the conviction to score, and we have taken two big parts of goalscoring out the team and we are going to have to reflect on this result and look at ourselves and make sure we are strong between now and the end of the year and maybe go back to basics.
“We came up against a Sunderland team we knew were in good form and once they got that first goal it raised their game and disjointed us, and we tried to chase it and rush things around the box when we are normally much calmer.
“You don’t want to lose to your rivals and in these circumstances which has happened two years in a row now but we have to be strong. We have to remember where we are in the league and how we got there.
“It is about taking stock now. We know how important it is to the fans and the memory is not going to get wiped away but we are professional and we have to get ready for a tough game with Chelsea and get ourselves a game plan that will work as it didn’t work today.”
“I have to be honest, the decision on Norwich baffles me, that a guy – in my view – cheated like [Bradley] Johnson does and gets off a red card and our guy [Loic Remy] stays on it, I don’t get that.
“We lose [Yohan] Cabaye and don’t get another transfer in, it has been a tough week, so we have had a few blows leading up to this game.”
