Struggling Spain received another setback as they lost to Germany in Vigo today but coach Del Bosque says he is still looking to the future with confidence.
Toni Kroos scored the only goal of the match in the 89th minute to secure a victory for World Champions Germany as the struggle of Spain to find the right balance in their squad continued in this game too. It was the first home defeat of La Roja under coach Vicente Del Bosque in Spain.
Spain coach Vicente del Bosque opted to start the game with young players which saw A?lvaro Morata making his senior debut while Isco spearheaded the attacking midfield with Nolito on his left and RaA?l GarcAi??a on the right. But these changes failed to change the fortunes of struggling Spain. The result marked Spain’s fifth loss in nine games.
And speaking after the defeat, coach Del Bosque said that this is a transitioning phase and he looks at future with confidence.
“We are in a period of transition and we want to continue looking to the future with optimism,” Del Bosque said in a press conference.
“But we are not entirely happy with the outcome. I agree with the assessment that it was an even and balanced game. We showed that we could out-play them at times, but we must praise Toni Kroos’ goal.”
Meanwhile, Germany coach Joachim Low also made some changes in his usual starting XI and handed the captaincy to Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira.
Speaking after their hard fought win over current European champions Spain, Low said that he is happy with the performance of his players throughout the year.
“I don’t think one could wish for a better way to end the year,” said Loew on the German Football Federation’s website (www.dfb.de).
“I’m very happy with our defensive display. We were better going forward in the second half than we were in the first.
“We have to keep on developing and improving in areas, but that was a good start today.
Toni Kroos, the only goal scorer of this match, was also happy with the recent form of Germany and said that it was a great year for the German football under coach Joachim Low.
“These two recent wins are just what we’d hoped for,” Kroos said. “We were very solid at the back and hardly let anything through. It’s been a great year for us under coach Joachim Low and it’s a great way to end it.”
