Selection policies at Milan, be it under Max Allegri or Clarence Seedorf, have been questionable more often than not. Topping these bizarre choices, rather lack of choices at all, is the blind eye that has been turned to 22-year-old Riccardo Saponara.
Faith in youth often helps clubs resurrect themselves after a heavy fall. When oneai??i??s ability to spend is curtailed, itai??i??s the youth setup that helps rebuild. A look at some of the most successful clubs in the last few years clearly emphasizes the importance to revolve the team around youngsters at the club. Bayern Munichai??i??s could currently boast of a lineup consisting of six homegrown players, and this is probably the most dangerous club in world football at the moment. The Barcelona of Pep Guardiola also had numbers of this sort, achieving great success after showing huge faith in their youth system and the younger players brought into the club.
To expect the current Milan side to even dream of the sort of success achieved by the clubs mentioned earlier is outright ridiculous. Milan have been in a slump for a few years now, managing to save face with some incredible individual performances over the past couple of seasons. But this season has turned out to be the worst of the lot. The club languishes in eleventh position, 18 points of the third Champions League position ai??i?? the ideal goal for the club at the start of the season.
Under both managers this season, Seedorf and Allegri, the starting lineups put out week after week have come under some criticism. Why play Daniele Bonera ahead of any of the other available center backs? Why is Giampaolo Pazzini used so infrequently? Why isnai??i??t Riccardo Montolivo rotated with Andrea Poli more often?
The list of questions might be a lot longer but one that doesnai??i??t seem to be asked often enough and is never addressed is that of the complete lack of use of one of the more highly touted youngsters in Italy, Riccardo Saponara.
Milanai??i??s midfield has lacked inspiration all season long. Kakaai??i??s first few games with the club were a bright start but at 31 years of age, performing at the top level every week was going to be next to impossible. Under the Allegri regime, Kaka was often partnered by fellow Brazilian Robinho. Anyone who has followed the former Real Madrid attackerai??i??s career will be no stranger to his inconsistency. In Robinho, Milan have a player capable of putting in 5 good minutes per game at best.
With Stephan El Shaarawy out injured, Allegriai??i??s options were limited. And one of the names available to be used behind the striker and in tandem with either Kaka or Robinho was Saponara. At just 21 then, he would surely have provided those much needed legs in midfield. With lots of comparisons being drawn between him and Kaka, his usage alongside the Brazilian superstar would undoubtedly have helped his learning curve grow exponentially.
The winds of change blew across the San Siro in January and Allegri gave way to Clarence Seedorf. The Dutchman chose to shift from a 4-3-2-1 to a 4-2-3-1, thereby giving young Saponara an inkling of hope. The arrival of Keisuke Honda probably did put a dent in the young Italianai??i??s chances of starting time, but the failure of his move away from Milan was proof that he was to be a part of Seedorfai??i??s plans.
Unfortunately for Saponara, Milanai??i??s most recent acquisition, Adel Taarabt, has further increased Saponaraai??i??s lack of playing time. With five players, and possibly Andrea Poli making it six, fighting for three starting spots that are available, it seems highly unlikely that Saponara will really get much playing time.
But an honest unbiased look at the credentials and abilities of those vying for the same spots as Saponara shows that they arenai??i??t really a lot more qualified or proven than the 22-year-old. Kaka is far from the player that he was during his first period with Milan. Yes, he does show glimpses of those glorious days but he is far from able to put in those performances over ninety minutes and on a regular basis.
Honda has put in some quality performances in both Japanese and CSKA Moscow colours but performing consistently in a league that is far above that in Russia is going to be a big test. His first few performances havenai??i??t lacked promise but havenai??i??t been as mesmerizing as fans of the club would have liked. Robinho may have plied his trade for the likes of Manchester City and Real Madrid, but his recklessness and lack of professionalism do not work in his favor. As has been said earlier, the best on can expect from the fancy feet of Robinho are 5 good minutes – nothing more and possibly a lot less.
Taarabt, who arrived on loan from Queenai??i??s Park Rangers in the winter, has stuttered across England but never really hit the ground running at either Tottenham Hotspur or Fulham. Taarabtai??i??s time with QPR was a lot more impressive, but are his credentials a lot better than those of Saponara? Probably not by a considerable enough margin, especially after Saponaraai??i??s regular contributions to Italyai??i??s youth sides over the past couple of years.
With none amongst the current bunch clearly ahead of the rest, Seedorf needs to experiment a lot more. There seems to be no combination that is working well enough to help Milan salvage anything this season. Faith in a youngster like Saponara, and possibly Poli, will help provide this Milan midfield with a new outlook. Saponara also has the age factor working in his favor, as Kaka and Robinho are on the wrong side of 30, Honda is 27, and Taarabtai??i??s loan deal is a sign that he may not even be at the club for too long.
Seedorf needs to put a foot down and stop these unnecessary buys of unproven foreign players from lower clubs/leagues. When the club already has untried talent at the club, why search far and wide for someone who isnai??i??t guaranteed to be a better player. El Shaarawy and De Sciglio are prime examples of this ideology working well, and Saponaraai??i??s ability is far from doubted. The 22-year-old youngster is possibly the oil that this Milan engine needs to start running again and Seedorf needs to try him out a lot more.
