Here’s a detailed profile of Palermo, Empoli and Cesena, the three promoted sides for the 2014-15 edition of Italian Serie A.
Itai??i??s been more than a couple of weeks since the ultimate footballing spectacle concluded at the Maracana and lifeai??i??s taking its normal course again. While football keeps expanding its horizons with every major international tournament, at the end of the day, club football is what keeps things going. With still more than a month to go before football resumes, intense coverage of transfer updates and pre-season friendlies currently occupy the major share of column spaces. However, one of the more exciting aspects in the build-up to a new season is the arrival of those several new entrants in the top leagues, having been promoted from the lower divisions. A mere chance to play in the top division is nothing short of a dream come true to some of these clubs and players while for a few others, switching between divisions isnai??i??t entirely unfamiliar.
Football in Italy is famous for making headlines for the wrong reasons more often than not. The lower division clubs are much more susceptible to an organized machinery of bookies in operation and often we see clubs facing penalties of one sort or the other. That however, isnai??i??t the case this time around and the three promoted teams do not carry along the baggage of those asterisk marks on the points table indicating to the deduction they face for the season. The three clubs making their return this season are quite among top division circles and have played at this level before in fairly recent past.

It will be hard to argue against a man claiming Maurizio Zamparini is the most interesting character in World Football today. The Friuli based businessman who acquired the Sicilian outfit in the summer of 2002 has surely turned the fortunes of the club upside down but at the same time has never failed to keep the press amused with his often bizarre policies of hiring, sacking and rehiring personnel. It took Zampariniai??i??s Palermo two seasons to make a return to Serie A after a hiatus that lasted more than three decades. And since the promotion in 2004, the Sicilians managed to scale the heights few would have imagined them doing.
Palermo became a household name in the Calcio circles and nearly a hipsterai??i??s club with their consistency at challenging the established legacy in Serie A. Their performance in the league was admirably consistent for the first few seasons and a few odd stints in Europe too werenai??i??t entirely wasteful. As many as four Palermo players were part of the World Cup winning Italian squad in 2006 and it looked it was only a matter of time before the club established itself as a regular fixture among the Champions League bracket. However, Zampariniai??i??s inexplicably frenzied approach with his managers and coaching staff was always a matter of concern as it never allowed Palermo to consolidate on a highly rewarding season. After every single hint of potential success, things would unsettle and under a new leadership, the foundation would be laid all over again.
But Palermo continued being a force in the reckoning nevertheless and despite having to sell one star player after another to balance the books, the squad never looked out of depth. That is until the summer of 2012. The next 12 months were perhaps the worst Palermo endured in a long, long time. The squad was already showing signs of a giant decline in quality and it soon started to show in performances too. Zamparini enforced as many as five managerial changes in a matter of a year but the drop to the second division seemed imminent. The inevitable was confirmed as Palermo finally went down after a nine year stint in the top flight and thus ended a highly colourful chapter in Serie A.
Upon their relegation, Zamparini had initially stated his commitment to then manager Beppe Sannino but an agreement failed to materialize. Much to the surprise of the outer world, the President then appointed former AC Milan star Gennaro Gattuso as the head coach. The 2006 World Cup winner did not boast of any coaching credentials and given his temperamental history, his union with Zamparini always seemed feeble. The major departures from the previous season were captain Fabrizio Miccoli who saw out his contract and the star forward Josip Ilicic who left for Fiorentina.
Under Gattusoai??i??s watch, the club did show some intent in the transfer window but the results in the initial phase of the season were anything but inspiring. Patience is not a quality youai??i??d ideally associate with Zamparini and to absolutely nobodyai??i??s surprise, Gattusoai??i??s services were terminated. Former Sampdoria and Siena coach Giuseppe Iachini was called in as replacement and under him the results improved dramatically. Star striker Abel Hernandez was notching goals regularly while the summer acquisition Kyle Lafferty too had made his mark. By the end of the year, Palermo finished on top of the table and held the summit position for the rest of the season in 2014. In the first week of the May, with their 1-0 win over Novara, Palermo eliminated all the mathematical probabilities of letting the title slip with as many as five weeks to spare. A year ago, it was a humiliating end to the season in Serie A but the Sicilian side is well on its way back.
How soon Palermo manage to adjust to the demands of the top flight still remains to be seen but they seem to have taken the right steps so far. Their transfer budget is understandably far from extravagant but theyai??i??re making some efficient purchases. Northern Ireland forward Lafferty has already left for Norwich City and the squad therefore is still short on forwards but the return of on-loan midfielder Francesco Della Rocca and defender Andrea Mantovani should indeed add some valuable experience to the roster. Left Back Achraf Lazaar, who was thoroughly impressive last season serving a loan spell from Varese, has been permanently signed.
This is definitely a different looking Palermo side from the days of not so distant past when world class players such as Javier Pastore and Edinson Cavani used to ply their trade at the club. But it is certainly not short on confidence and provided Zamparini continues to extend his trust in Iachini despite some early hiccups, retaining a spot in Serie A with relative ease is the least one could expect from Palermo in the upcoming season.
Empoli

For a club in the 94th year of its existence, Empoli should perhaps have done better and establish itself as a more regular top division club by now. But the club has had its fair share of Serie A appearances in the last decade and for a city with only as many as 45,000 inhabitants, it does mean quite a lot.
For the large part in its history, Empoli struggled to make it to the whoai??i??s who of Italian football and spend time in obscurity. Their debut in Serie A in 1986 was a remarkable feat but the dream wouldnai??i??t last too long. In a matter of another four years, they were languishing in the third division and would endure a prolonged struggle before making a return to Serie B during the mid 90ai??i??s. A second successive promotion the following season meant a second chance to compete in what was arguably the best league in Europe back then and under the leadership of Luciano Spalletti, Empoli finished a respectable 12th on the table. But pretty similar to their previous stint in the Serie A, they would go down again, only to earn no more than 2 more promotions over the next 15 years.
Empoliai??i??s most prolific phase in the top division was when they earned a chance to play in Europe after a 10th place finish in the 2005-06 season after a number of clubs above them in the table were denied a chance owing to their part in the infamous Calciopoli scandal. In the same season, the squad too was considerably strengthened with some astute signings ai??i?? notably of players like Ignazio Abate, Sebastian Giovinco and Claudio Marchisio ai??i?? the latter two on loan. But the season went dramatically downwards for the Tuscan based outfit as they failed to battle the long looming relegation.
After narrowly missing out on a Serie A rebirth in the very next season, Empoli endured some more years in the 2nd division, once barely managing to avoid further slip to Serie C1. The 2012-13 season was one when the hope started to rebuild only to end up in a playoff heartbreak against Livorno. That was not to be the case the next season though as the club finished well within the direct qualification zone second only to the champions Palermo.
The squad in general is well blend with youth and experience in due proportions but given their topsy-turvy starts to a new season after earning a promotion in the recent history suggests they arenai??i??t entirely immune to going down again almost straightaway.
Cesena

The region of Emilia-Romagna has produced a number of Football clubs but seldom have any of them accomplished the dizzying feats. Last season, Serie A saw one of the clubs from the region going down in Bologna while another one in Sassuolo survived by the scruff of their neck. The new season however, brings with it yet another representation from Romagna as Cesena gear up to make their return to the top flight after going down at the end of the 2011-12 season.
Cesena didnai??i??t create the fondest of memories in the next immediate season finishing 14th in Serie B but things quickly changed in 2013-14 as they managed to occupy a playoff slot. The two knockout triumphs over Modena and Latina secured the much coveted promotion for the Bianconeri. Cesena werenai??i??t the most consistent side by any means but kept winning important points at the crucial junctures in the season. The return to Serie A brings with it quite a few exciting prospects for any club and Cesenaai??i??s no exception.
The most recent loan acquisitions of Juventusai??i?? Nicola Leali and Horour Magnusson are pretty smart moves in the market and will significantly improve the squad quality and depth. Leali in particular is billed a potential successor to Gianluigi Buffon at Juventus and could one day give Mattia Perin a run for his money for the top job at the national side. The 21 year old Iceland defender Magnusson is a versatile player on the field and can operate both from the centre as well as on the left. Midfielders Manuel Coppola and Emmanuel Cascione are crucial to Cesenaai??i??s fortunes in the season but a signing or two in this area wonai??i??t hurt.
The Cavallucci Marini had undergone a humiliation of ultimate proportions during their last stint in Serie A finishing rock bottom amassing nomore than 22 points. They will surely start the season with more confidence but survival might turn out to be a test sterner than what theyai??i??d prefer.
