Manchester United 2013-14 Season Review: A Season To Forget

In a season of records all made for the wrong reasons, we analyze Manchester Unitedai??i??s disappointing domestic campaign, the brighter Champions League outing and look for clues to the future.

For people who have any kind of association with Manchester United, the end of the 2013-14 season will be accompanied by sighs of relief. The relief stems from the fact that itai??i??s all over. It was their worst Premier League campaign, where new lows to which the team sunk, were discovered. For fans who have been spoilt with Premier League silverware in the Sir Alex Ferguson era, the shock and disappointment of the latest campaign is appalling to say the least.

For eight seasons prior to this unfortunate term, United had never finished outside the top two teams in the league table. From that to finishing seventh, losing twelve games in the process, failing to qualify for Europe, with an abysmal home record and an even worse record against the six teams that finished above them ai??i?? Unitedai??i??s season has been nothing short of failure. We take you through this miserable campaign that was devoid of conviction and try to find a glimmer of hope for the future.

Pre-Season

When Sir Alex Ferguson phoned David Moyes this time last year to invite him for a chat, little did he know that the biggest job in world football was going to fall into his hands. Moyes said the job was too hard to turn down, and pre-season began with optimism at being led by ai???The Chosen Oneai??i??, even though United won only two of their seven pre-season friendlies.

The first job in Moyesai??i??s inbox was the Wayne Rooney situation. Ferguson, as he was leaving, suggested that the England striker wanted a move away, and it was left to Moyes to iron out the situation. The new manager made clear in his first press conference about holding on to Rooney when speculation was rife that the striker was on his way out. To Moyesai??i??s credit, he persuaded Rooney to stay.

The next big milestone was the summer transfer window, where much was made of Moyesai??i??s inability to draw big names to Old Trafford in the shadow of uncertainty that surrounded the club after Fergusonai??i??s departure. Perhaps to allay such fears, or because of inexperience at handling a prime-time transfer window, Moyes let slip his summer transfer targets, something that was never done at Old Trafford. Sir Alex kept all his transfer dealings secret before actually making the signing. Moyes, on the other hand, went about declaring an interest in Gareth Bale, Cesc Fabregas, Cristiano Ronaldo and Thiago Alcantara.

Fellaini was a desperate panic signing on deadline day.

None of these eventually joined the club, leaving Moyes red faced and forced to sign Marouane Fellaini on deadline day from his old club Everton for A?27.5 million, four million more than his transfer clause on his Everton contract. The signing reeked of desperation since Fellaini was clearly not even in the top five players United and Moyes were going after. Fellaini would turn out to be a disastrous signing. As former captain Gary Neville pointed out:

ai???But if they canai??i??t get No 1, No 2, three, four. Iai??i??m not in a rush. As a Manchester United fan, Iai??i??d rather seen James Wilson come through than some fourth choice striker who isnai??i??t at the top of the list.

ai???I donai??i??t want signing number eight, nine, 10 because they canai??i??t get No 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. I have no interest in that.ai??i??

These panic signings rarely fit into the scheme of things. Fellainiai??i??s use in the United squad for a long time was a divisive topic ai??i?? some asking for his installation alongside Michael Carrick as midfield muscle, while others preferred to see him in a target man role he carried out well at Everton. Neither really worked for the team and so minimal was his impact on the team that it took 27 Premier League games for the Belgian to finally win a game as a starter.

A Shaky Start

Moyes won his first and only trophy as Manchester United manager with the 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic in the FA Community Shield ai??i?? his first official match in charge of the team. A few days later, Moyes was beaming after his Manchester United team dismantled Swansea 4-1 in the first league game in charge. But the good times deserted the Scotsman as Unitedai??i??s season started to nosedive since.

United lost to West Bromwich Albion at home 2-1 after a loss away to Manchester City 4-1, which seemed to cut deeper than other defeats. Perhaps Moyes was overwhelmed by a fixture list that saw United take on Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City in the first five games. Defeat to West Brom left them reeling in 12thAi??position after six games, which prompted the first signs of dissatisfaction from the fans.

United improved their form after their terrible start and were unbeaten in the league through October and November, climbing to 5thAi??after their 1-0 win over Arsenal at home. Their league form revival was mirrored in their Champions League group stages, where they went unbeaten and finished first in a group that also had Bayer Leverkusen, Shakhtar Donetsk and Real Sociedad. Perhaps the highest point during this stage was the 5-0 hammering of Sami Hyypiaai??i??s Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena, at a time when the German team were second in the Bundesliga table and in fine form.

No Christmas Joy

The festive December period saw United slump to new lows, losing two consecutive home games ai??i?? first to Everton and then to Newcastle United. A mini revival of four wins on the trot was again marred by defeat at home to Tottenham Hotspur on New Yearai??i??s Day, followed by that shocking 2-1 League Cup semi-final first leg loss away to Sunderland a week later and eventual loss on penalties after scores were tied in the second leg at home.

The dismal mood around Old Trafford was lifted when creative playmaker Juan Mata was signed from Chelsea for A?37 million to help United reach the Champions League spots, but the initial wave of optimism soon fell as Mata failed to have any immediate impact, in part because Moyes insisted in shunting him to the wings as opposed to Mataai??i??s preferred number 10 role behind the striker. Tactical gaffes like these made the belief strong around Old Trafford that Moyes was indeed not the right man for the job, and before long banners for his removal were out.

Against the traditional top four (Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United) in his Premier League career as manager, Moyes failed to win any of the 49 games he was in charge. This underlined the oft-held belief that Moyes was good at managing teams that were underdogs and nothing more. His Everton teams typically were rock solid in defence, which were set up to spring surprises at big teams. He never really put out a team on the pitch against the Big Four to win. They were mostly designed to get results, not to go for the jugular.

A Dismal End

The end looked near for Moyes when United lost in the Champions Leg round of sixteen first leg 2-0 to Olympiakos. The knives were out and it looked like Moyesai??i??s time was up. However, an inspired Robin van Persie hat-trick made sure that United progressed to the quarter-finals where they met none other than mighty Bayern Munich.

In the league however, things went from bad to worse with defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City only bringing out how far United had fallen behind the top teams in the Premier League. The embarrassingly big margins of defeat were hard to stomach, and Moyes was seen as making weak excuses about his teamai??i??s shambolic displays.

The two legs against Bayern Munich were the last glimmer of hope for Moyes, and to be fair, this was the kind of tie he relished ai??i?? where his team were the underdogs for a change and were not expected to fire on all cylinders. Moyes did well under such a constraint, with United drawing the first leg at home and even taking the lead at the Allianz Arena before squandering it to go out of the Champions League. Again, Moyesai??i??s post-match interview indicated a manager happy to have played until the quarter-finals of the Champions League ai??i?? something the fans were unhappy about.

A 2-0 defeat away to former club Everton proved to be the final straw for the Manchester United board, and Moyes was shown the door after ten months in charge of one of the worst seasons in Manchester Unitedai??i??s recent history. Club legend Ryan Giggs was put in charge in the interim capacity, and while the morale improved, results never really did. United finished seventh in the league with 64 points, their lowest points tally in the last 22 years in the Premier League ai??i?? a season to forget for sure.

Best Player of the Season

David De Gea

De Gea – One of the stand-out performers of the season

The 23 year old Spanish shot stopper was one player whose standard never went down throughout a season when many around him failed to keep their performances going. De Gea had a strong season where he kept twelve clean sheets, but he would surely have kept more with a little help from his defenders.

Sir Alex Fergusonai??i??s faith in the youngsterai??i??s ability certainly paid off as De Gea now looks to be the best keeper in the Premier League. Part of such a transition must also go to Chris Woods, the goalkeeping coach Moyes brought on from Everton, although it looks unlikely Woods will stay on next season. De Gea, however, looks set to stay at Manchester United, who are going to offer him a bumper deal to ward off interest from Barcelona.

Notable Mentions: Wayne Rooney, Adnan Januzaj

Worst Player of the Season

Marouane Fellaini

Moyesai??i??s summer signing was definitely the worst player of the season. Fellainiai??i??s season never took off and he never looked like a player deserving of wearing the Manchester United shirt. Slow, lethargic, lazy and inept, Fellaini bungled on from one mistake to the next. His contributions were minimal and it is no surprise that it took 27 games for the Belgian to register his first win as a starter.

Fellaini was supposed to add a new physical dimension on the pitch that United lacked, but showed little to prove he was worth the amount of money splashed on him. Against Bayern Munich, Fellaini was possibly the worst player to carry out his duties. Lacking energy, urgency and potency, Fellaini lazed around the pitch, gave the ball away too often and fouled the opponents a lot. He is one player United fans would not mind seeing the back of.

Notable Mentions: Patrice Evra, Michael Carrick, Ashley Young

Most Memorable Match

There are two games that could possibly find mention here and both, unsurprisingly, are from Unitedai??i??s Champions League campaign. The away game against Bayer Leverkusen showed the best United played all season, hammering the German side for five goals without reply in their own backyard, at a time when Leverkusen were second in the Bundesliga.

However, the accolade goes to the round of sixteen second leg win over Olympiakos, purely because of the task at hand, and the awareness that anything less than a three-goal win would spell exit from the competition. The task was made even tougher in the wake of the embarrassing 3-0 defeat to Liverpool in the league, and belief was at an all-time low.

In spite of the challenge, United went out on the pitch and did exactly what was asked of them, Robin van Persie scoring a memorable hat-trick to help United win 3-0 on the night and 3-2 on aggregate to progress to the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Most Disappointing Match

Out of the plethora of examples that do justice to the word disappointment aptly enough, this honor goes to the the defeat to Liverpool at home on the 16thAi??of March. It came at a time when United looked to be back on a road to revival, and the Liverpool game could have been the one to turn the season around, but it was not to be.

A most disappointing conclusion that was drawn from the game was that Liverpool didnai??i??t even have to play exceedingly well to win 3-0, and a loss to a traditional rival like Liverpool probably hurt a bit more than that to cross-town rivals Manchester City.

Goal of the Season

Without doubt the superb volley from the halfway line from Wayne Rooney away at West Ham United was right up there with the best goals of the league. Without describing this any further, we leave you with this scintillating bit of technique, awareness and precision. You may applaud:

Conclusion: Manchester United Must Look Ahead

In a season of accepted transition, United fans might have expected a slight decline in the performance of the team. However, such a drastic fall would not have been envisaged. David Moyes tried to take United into the misty future but failed miserably. All blame, however, must not lie with the manager. The players also failed to live up to their expected standards. Outgoing captain Nemanja Vidic broke his silence recently and went on to claim that Moyes tried hard at his job and was a professional manager, but the players never really warmed to his new style of management and tactics. It is also rumoured that Moyes once took Vidic and Ferdinand aside during training to tell them how to defend like Phil Jagielka.

The season is done and dusted now, and United must look for a way to bounce back. With Louis van Gaalai??i??s appointment imminent, United must now look carefully at the players they should invest in and should perhaps give the new manager more time than the ten months that were afforded to Moyes. Van Gaal, for now, looks to be the right man for the job, and with United out of Europe next season, Van Gaal could focus on competing for the Premier League next season without distractions. He is known to bring up youngsters well and the future then looks bright for the club with players like Adnan Januzaj and James Wilson showing great promise. However, time will tell what this new era in Manchester Unitedai??i??s history brings.
