United fans expecting the Old Trafford club to straight away challenge for the league title might need to temper their expectations. Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and Ryan Giggs would not be a part of the playing squad this season; plethora of world class experience has been lost and there is an evident lack of leadership especially in defensive positions.

Arsene Wenger looks determined to bring in more quality in the window and seal their place in the top four. Liverpool, though, have lost their most influential player. Suarez is off to Barca while Brendon Rodgers has brought in a lot of promising to good players from all over the globe. As things stand it looks like the Merseyside club have strengthened their squad significantly but surely the departure of the Uruguayan weakens their starting eleven. Liverpool fans will argue that Rodgers is the key to their success, but from the outside, it looks like they are the only ones from the top four that have been weakened by the transfer window.
Man United on their part have made two vital signings, Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera. While Luke Shaw is a great prospect and should straight away improve the left side of Unitedai??i??s defense, losing Evra and Buttner means United need to add another option for that position. Bilbaoai??i??s Ander Herrera could potentially be the difference between last season and this one; the Spaniard is a class act and Premiership fans who havenai??i??t heard or seen much of him are in for a surprise. Nevertheless, Herrera alone might not be enough. With Carrick out injured for at least 3 months, United need a midfield partner for Ander. None of the current options inspire much confidence and another world class addition is the need of the hour. If United get their man this transfer window, the chances of a much better campaign than last term will surely catapult.
As things stand, the options in defense for the Old Trafford club look rather bleak. While Jones, Smalling and Evans have all shown promise, their careers have been marred by recurring injuries. Jonny Evans, when fit, would be one of the two center backs with one of Smalling or Jones as his partner. At right-back, Rafael had a poor season last term, but then who didnai??i??t? Rafael has his moments of rashness, but the Brazilian at his best is very good and was sensational during Fergieai??i??s last season.
Despite the addition of Shaw from Southampton, United still require a minimum of two defensive additions. A back up left-back and preferably a top quality center-back are much needed if the club harbors ambitions of getting back on their feet.
There is still a lot of time to go before the transfer window closes; lots of things could potentially change in a month. At this moment of time though, even considering Van Gaalai??i??s brilliance and outstanding leadership qualities, the United first team squad is short of quality in a couple of vital areas of the field.
