Insanity is doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results. Itai??i??s famously said ai???Once bitten, twice shyai??? but if one still insists on giving it a third go well then failure is richly deserved. Over the course of the season Man United have contrived to repeat their mistakes and now risk completely failing their season long objectives and you couldnai??i??t say no one saw that coming.
Itai??i??s not a sin to err, there is certainly a lot to learn from your mistakes but itai??i??s a cardinal sin to continue on that erroneous path. Man United are reaping what they have sown and David Moyes and the management must take the blame.
After the shambolic transfer window, where United ended up paying over the odds and yet somehow failed to strengthen at all, the squad looks highly imbalanced. The continued pursuit of Leighton Baines didnai??i??didn’t bear fruit, while a last ditch attempt at luring Fabio Coentrao from Real Madrid also failed to materialize. As a result, United fell short in the Full Back department with only Rafael and Evra as the two genuine world class options.
Now, there is a certain Fabio Da Silva who might not be world class, but is surely competent enough. It was only a couple of seasons ago that the Brazilian was lining up in the Champions League final as the first choice Right Back and looked to have cemented his place. Injuries though hampered his progress and the subsequent loan move to QPR that followed didnai??i??t quite serve its purpose. Fabio was now behind his twin Rafael who looked to have stolen a march.
United also brought in Alexander Buttner in the meanwhile as a deputy to Evra for the Left Back berth. While Buttner has given the odd decent performance, never has the Dutchman displayed anywhere enough quality to be deemed good enough to displace Evra in the long term or even be considered a backup plan.
Now on the other hand there is a Brazilian Full Back capable of operating more than competently on either flanks rotting in the reserves or at most making the bench. Clearly, something is not right. Fabio has so far this season made just two appearances and has started just a solitary league game. His performance in that game was good enough to warrant a chance or two more. In the other game, Fabio came on as a late substitute, well he didn’t do too badly, and on the contrary he scored a good goal.
Surely there must be other considerations which come into the reckoning, as clearly only footballing ability cannot justify Fabio never getting a look in. Patrice Evra is a seasoned campaigner but the work load on his not so young shoulders is too much to bear and level of his performances have gradually degraded, the Frenchman invariably ends up playing every league game and every important European or domestic cup fixture. Evidently, itai??i??s not implausible to think that the man needs a break from time to time.
Also, at Right back, Rafael has endured an injury plagued season and has had to miss out on a number of games so far. Moyes has put his faith on Chris Smalling and at times on Antonio Valencia to deputize in Rafaai??i??s absence. Smalling is a Center Back by trade and has been caught out fairly regularly as apparent in the Manchester Derby and even in the defeat against Tottenham. Valencia can do a decent job against weaker sides but his natural instincts arenai??i??t those of a full back, he doesnai??i??t anticipate danger that quickly and has been caught ball watching against Everton where he allowed Bryan Oveido to score the winner and yet again against Spurs where he couldnai??i??t prevent Christian Eriksen from heading home from close range.
The Irony of the situation is, itai??i??s not that either Smalling or Valencia have been outstanding going forwards and havenai??i??t contributed much to Unitedai??i??s attacks. So, why not play an actual Full-Back and let him do what he does best?
Fabio at least deserves a chance, to fail or to prosper but on the evidence of current showings of the other options he couldn’t possibly be any worse. United might go out and spend money on a new Full-Back but the absence of Fabio Da Silva continues to remain conspicuous and at times almost impossible to explain.
