Manchester United manager David Moyes has backed Phil Jones and Chris Smalling to be the future center back partnership of England national team.
The duo started at the heart of the Manchester United defence at the Hawthorns as United cruised to a relatively comfortable win and the Red Devils also managed to keep a clean sheet as West Brom hardly troubled them at the back. It was a solid display Smalling and Jones, who also scored the opener after heading home from a Robin van Persie free kick, and David Moyes has no doubts about the bright future of this partnership both for club and country.
United have a tough task at hand this summer as they look to replace the experienced duo of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand and Moyes insisted he wants to try out the younger players in the squad to see what they are capable of. The former Everton manager also insisted that Jones and Smalling could easily be Englandai??i??s center back partnership at the upcoming World Cup in Brazil, although it seems unlikely that either of them will be able to replace Gary Cahill at this point.
“I think the future will probably be with Jones and Smalling as the two future England centre-backs.
“The two boys today could easily be the two centre-backs for England in the World Cup.
“They will certainly be competing with the other Manchester United centre-backs to start for this club.”
“I’ve said I wanted see how they do before the end of the season.
“I will be continuing to use Vidic and Rio and Jonny Evans. We know Vida (Vidic) is moving on so we have to take the chance to look at what the younger ones are capable of.” ai??i?? The Manchester United manager said.
The reigning Premier League champions are expected to undergo a complete overhaul in the summer as David Moyes will be back by a huge transfer kitty and they already been linked with a host of players, including defenders. Future of Patrice Evra at the club has also come under a lot of speculations, which means it could be a completely new look defence for United next season. Jonny Evans, who has faced a few fitness concerns recently, has perhaps been their most consistent performer at the back since last season and it looks likely that Jones might turn out to be his long term partner at the back. Smalling has been forced to play at the right back a lot this season and he hasnai??i??t really looked comfortable in that role, with Rafael back in the side, he should get more opportunities centrally before the end of this season.
