Manchester United are close to completing their move for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera, according to reports in Spain.
The Manchester United-Ander Herrera soap opera has been in progress since last summer when former Red Devils manager David Moyes made an attempt to sign the Spaniard. The transfer saga ended in embarrassment as three imposters tried to conduct a deal on behalf of the English club and negotiations broke down.
But according to latest reports in Spain, Manchester United are finally close to securing the signature of Ander Herrera. United have offered A?30m for the midfielder, who has been a key figure for Athletic Bilbao since joining them from Real Zaragoza in 2011, which will activate his release clause. Reports suggest that Herraraai??i??s release clause will rise to A?34m on 1st of July, hence Manchester United are pushing through to complete this move for the end of this month.
Manchester United initially made their move for the midfielder at the start of last season when David Moyes was appointed as the manager of the club. But the move failed to materialize as three men, imposing as Unitedai??i??s representatives, set out to negotiate with the Spanish club regarding the deal. But as the deal broke down it was revealed that United knew nothing about those men or the negotiation and the transfer window ended in a fiasco for the Red Devils.
United endured a disappointing season last time around and they are expected to spend heavily in this transfer window with Louis van Gaal looking to reshape the squad for next season. Strengthening their thin midfield was at the top of the priority list for the Dutch manager and Herrera would fit into the United side with ease.
According to Sky Sports News reporter James Cooper, all that remains to be concluded is the medical and personal terms.
“It is very, very close. It is a question of when, not if. It is more likely to be on Wednesday but Manchester United are very close to making their first signing of the summer and the first signing under Louis van Gaal.
“But Manchester United are proving they can go and get a player. It’s a question of ‘if at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again. Last summer there were some farcical scenes.
