The last time these two sides locked horns, Andre Villas Boas ended up losing his job as Tottenham manager. Liverpool had completely and utterly humiliated Villas Boas’s side at home in a 5-0 thumping victory. For Liverpool, this win was made even more special as Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge had both missed the match with injuries. Yet, Liverpool, who at that moment were being regarded as the side which would lose the clash, won convincingly and made a mockery of the Spurs side. The match had Luis Suarez scoring twice and Jordan Henderson, Raheem Sterling and Jon Flanagan all getting a goal.
Tim Sherwood would hope that this match doesn’t half-resemble the previous one and Spurs are able to do better against the second placed Liverpool who they face at Anfield. Sherwood would be aware that the Reds haven’t lost a game at Anfield since September (against Southampton). In fact, that was the only loss Liverpool suffered at home. Brendan Rodgers would be wanting to increase his winning streak to eight matches on the trot. The Reds are also the only Premier League team to be undefeated in 2014.
We look at the three key battles that will unfold on the pitch on Sunday:
1. Luis Suarez vs Jan Vertonghen
Luis Suarez has 28 goals to his name this season. His individual tally of goals, after missing out on the first five games is more than four Premier League teams. Combined with Daniel Sturridge, who himself has 20 goals to his name (and has himself missed 8 games due to an ankle injury), SAS have a total of 48 goals which is still 8 more than Tottenham’s 40. Liverpool have the highest number of goals in the league with 84, which is more than double the number the North London club has managed. Spurs would hence realize that the Reds attack with real menace and the counter-attack is their main asset. Luis Suarez, who spearheads the Liverpool attack would be the one Spurs would hope to close down and make sure doesn’t ruin their night. Jan Vertonghen, who operates at the centre back (sometimes as a full back as well) would be the main man who would want to make sure Luis Suarez’s job is not made easy through cheap defending and open spaces, something Spurs were guilty of in the reverse fixture.
England is well aware of Suarez’s credentials by now. The Uruguayan is being hailed as Premier League’s finest player this season and one of the top five in Europe, with many even suggesting he is at the same level as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Spurs would need for their defence, led by the Belgian to make sure they make Suarez very very hard. Liverpool have truly made Anfield their fortress this season. Liverpool’s defence is not as solid as one would want it to be. If Tottenham can restrict the goals till half-time, they would truly stand a chance at winning the match by trying to put the Reds under pressure in the second half. Keeping Liverpool devoid of goals in the first half is more important than getting a goal quickly for Sherwood’s men.
2. Emanuel Adebayor/Roberto Soldado vs Martin Skrtel
If Liverpool have had one unattractive feature in their football this season, it has to be the defence. The fragility of their own back-line, is the Reds biggest enemy and is the one thing all Liverpool supporters are worried, would cost them dearly at the end. Liverpool have time and again, conceded cheap goals against sides in the bottom half of the table. Individual errors have also costed the Reds so far.
Therefore what the Tottenham attack can capitalize on, would be Liverpool’s stumbling or careless defence. There are still doubts over whether Adebayor would be playing the match (Sherwood has said that the ex-Arsenal player would be in the squad). If he does not, Roberto Soldado would be the player spearheading their attack. Both of them could play together as well. Whatever the case maybe, they have to make sure they give the Liverpool defence the same treatment, Suarez and Sturridge have been giving the remainder of the league through the course of the season. Tottenham need to attack Liverpool with confidence and not get intimidated with the Reds’ attacking prowess. Teams like Aston Villa and Sunderland have made Liverpool work very hard for a result and it should give Sherwood’s team all the confidence they need. Adebayor and Soldado would need to exploit the vulnerabilities Liverpool show at the back. Adebayor is a great header of the ball and Liverpool are not good at defending from corners, set pieces etc.
Martin Skrtel, the Liverpool defender to have featured the most for the Reds this season, would be the main man who would be entrusted with defensive responsibilities and along with Sakho or Agger would have to stop the Tottenham attack. The Slovakian would have to make sure Liverpool don’t have to rely on the attack to get the club out of jail again. The back line needs to be responsible and can’t afford a slip up. The three points are vital for Liverpool if they need to be competing for the title till the end of the season.
3.Raheem Sterling vs Christian Eriksen
Raheem Sterling has had a fantastic season so far. The 19 year old has played 26 matches in the league and scored six goals along with grabbing five assists. His fantastic performances have made several senior club players including Steven Gerrard, along with manager Brendan Rodgers call Roy Hodgson to put the young lad on the plane to Brazil. Raheem Sterling has become a name that has started troubling veteran defenders in the league. His pace on the flanks is his biggest asset and is a quality he makes full use of. Tottenham will have their hands full if Raheem starts on his favored position at the wings. Even if he is brought on as a substitute, and Philippe Coutinho is given a start, Sterling would be able to inject a lot of energy into the game as the two teams approach the dying embers of the fixture. The Spurs full backs, Naugton and Rose would have to make sure Sterling does not leave a mark on the game by cutting his speedy runs on the flanks.
Christian Eriksen was a player who had been targeted by and linked to Liverpool for a long time. He was sold by Ajax to Tottenham in the last summer window and was AVB’s best signing. He has played 18 times in the league for Spurs and has managed five goals and five assists. The Dane goes into this match with a lot of confidence being the main man in Tottenham’s victory 3-2 win over Southampton, scoring two goals and assiting the other. His team requires him to step up once again and make sure Spurs get the revenge of the 5-0 routing they suffered at the hand of the hosts back in December. Spurs need this victory for his side to finish in the top four and Spurs’ quest of Champions League football next season. Glen Johnson would have to be the man to stop Eriksen who operates mainly on the left side.
Both the young players would have a lot rested on their shoulders for this match. The two have to make sure they help their team get the vital three points.
