Arsenal travel to Anfield this Saturday to take on hosts Liverpool. For Arsenal, this season looks like one where they would be able to finally get a piece of silverware in the dusting trophy cabinet, with the club having a positive and genuinely encouraging season. For Liverpool, this season is about returning to the elite top 4 spots and getting Champions League nights back at Anfield.
In this edition of Rival Rendezvous, two of our resident authors, Aakriti Mehrotra (hereafter referred to as AM), a Liverpool supporter and Debarshee Mitra (hereafter referred to as DM), an Arsenal supporter,Ai??engage in a friendly banter and shoot a few questions at each other.
The Arsenal fan Debarshee takes the hot-seat first as Aakriti pits him her questions.
AM:Ai??First of all, congratulations on having a brilliant season so far. Anyway, letai??i??s start with the question of Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis announcing earlier this year that Arsene Wenger will extend his contract. How does an Arsenal fan feel about this? Wenger, of course, is loved by the Arsenal faithful and has been the apple of every Goonerai??i??s eye this season. But if Arsenal fail to win the league, do you think fans and the board will back the man? Or would you feel like its time for a change?
DM: Winning the league is definitely what every Arsenal fan wants the team to achieve this season, but personally and I think you would agree, Man City have the best squad and look favorites for the title despite the defeat on Monday. We have been consistent but how we fare against the big boys will destine our season and hence the next 10 days are extremely crucial.
Even if we fail to win the league this season and manage to finish in the top two, I think we would have come along a long away this season in terms of squad maturity and in terms of overall performances.Ai??Add to that the fact that not many managers out there can actually work as consistently and as successfully as Arsene Wenger. The man is Arsenal through and through and I think it is visible that his leadership is taking us in the right direction, so unless something catastrophic emanates, I would like us to stick around with Arsene.
AM:Ai??What do you think about the Kim KAi??llstrAi??m situation? A lot of rivals are laughing at Arsenal because of loaning in an injured player for tackling Arsenalai??i??s injury concerns. Do you think Wenger should have done better getting in another proven striker? Say, Berbatov?
DM:Ai??Ai??The transfer window was a definite failure from Arsenal’s point of view, no two ways about it. Wenger has criticized the January window repeatedly and I can see why. But despite this, no excuses can be made for not bringing in a striker.
Berbatov probably is past it and would merely have been a body, but Vucinic might have been a good temporary backup solution. Instead Kallstrom was signed, to cover up for Ramsey’s injury it seems but was injured himself. Wenger confessed he knew about it, so I just fail to make any sense out of it. As things stand, the inactivity in January could cost us the title, well before May.
AM:Ai??Do you think that the dependency on the attacking midfielders might be one thing that makes the club falter at the end? Or maybe a vulnerable patch which might show in the run of tough games that awaits Arsenal?
DM: Arsene Wenger is a true football romantic and the way his teams play only underlines that. The midfield is Arsenal’s strongest asset and it’s no surprise that the goals have been spread out as a result. The best part about Arsenal’s midfield is it’s diversity, both in terms of creativity and finishing. If Mesut is having an off game, Santi takes on responsibility, if not him then Rosicky, or Wilshere, or Chamberlain. This is why the likelihood of the entire unit running out of gas at one point is highly unlikely. In the bigger games the onus will lie on the playmakers to set the tone, hopefully they respond well.
AM:Ai??Do you think Arsenal has it all this season. Everything to add the coveted League trophy this season? Or do you think that its going to be another disappointing season? Who is Arsenal’s more serious title threat out of City and Chelsea?
DM:Ai??Arsenal definitely have their best chance of a title this season and what has worked in favour of Wenger is that this season has been all about team effort. The defence has been outstanding, the midfield has produced the goods and despite criticism Giroud has done very well. Arsenal have been unlucky with injuries but that can’t be an excuse when you’re competing for the title.
There is very little to choose between Arsenal, Chelsea and City at the moment but still if am to pick one who stands out, it has to be City. Fantastic all round team, but what they do now without Fernandinho and Aguero for a month will be telling in terms of the title race. Chelsea’s trump card is surely Mourinho, City’s is their fantastic attack, while we pride ourselves with a watertight defence. The next 3 months are going to be delicious.
AM:Ai??Who do you think is Liverpoolai??i??s biggest threat for you. What is the one department where you feel that The Reds edge out The Gunners and where do you think Arsenal are at complete superiority against Liverpool?
DM: Obviously it’s the attacking forward line where Liverpool are hands down better than us with Suarez-Sturridge-Sterling being as good a frontline as any in the league but what I would keep my eyes firmly fixed on is whether the SAS pairing can trouble the Arsenal defence. Suarez has often been well defended against by the Gunners but with Luis, there is no margin of error and hence Mertescielny need to be at their best. As far as Arsenal being superior are concerned, it has to be in midfield. The Liverpool mid of Henderson-Gerrard is lightweight and can be outrun by a good side and Arsenal have the players to make that pivot look very very average.
AM:Ai??Arsenal has an undefeated record against us (unfortunately) at Anfield in the previous six games. However, Liverpool have been a different side this season. Weai??i??ve shown more belief and will that in the last three seasons. How confident are you about this game against us? A final prediction?
DM:Ai??Anfield is one of my favourite grounds in England and probably even Europe. The fact that we boast of a good record recently only adds to it but will probably have no say in the outcome on Saturday. Liverpool have been very good at home and their overall performance this season kind of erases whatever little importance our good record there, holds. Suarez is due a goal against us and whenever these statistics and records are brought under the scanner they are broken, and I half-expect that on Saturday. We definitely can win this but with some key players missing for both sides, I will sit on the fence. a very attacking game with 2 goals a side each. 2-2 is my prediction.

DM:Ai??Liverpool and Arsenal have both enjoyed a reincarnation of sorts this season, what makes you believe the 2 clubs have improved so much within the span of one season?
AM: Spot on! The two sides have had a dream season of sorts so far. The fact that both the teams are exactly where they feel they want to be, or what they would have targeted at the start of the season, speaks volumes. I think it is the belief which has worked for both the teams. Arsenal are leading the Premier League right now and have been in the top spot for most part of this season and Liverpool have dropped out of the top 4 once this season, and managed to get back the following week. Considering the average season for both the teams last season, in terms of expectations, if this edition does not speak for improvement, I don’t know what does.
DM: Liverpool had the opportunity to close the gap at the top and go clear of the other 4th place contenders, do you think the result was a disaster of sorts in a weekend where most results went in favour of Liverpool? What are your expectations from this season, where do you see Liverpool finish?
AM: I think that match was more important than this one for Liverpool. The draw was a huge disappointment and left all the fans, and I’m sure the Liverpool management and players, aghast. The club had the opportunity to widen the gap and make some breathing space for themselves. However, Toure’s mistake cost us dearly and the shared points was a huge blow, considering United lost and Spurs drew.
However, the season has a number of matches and left and fortunately for us, the big ones are at home. I think Liverpool have the best chance of getting to Champions League this season. I feel like the 5-0 demolition of Spurs tampered with a lot of minds, including some of our fans, and people started thinking of Liverpool as title contenders. With our squad, and with the goal we have set for ourselves, getting to Champions League is the goal and I feel as that is the realistic expectation. I see the club finishing fourth.
DM:Ai??Transfer window shambles was a much talked about topic on deadline day as Liverpool missed out on several targets through out the window and eventually ended up signing no one. Does the transfer fiasco affect the club’s on field performances directly? With so many injuries a new player would definitely have helped boost the squad in terms of number and morale?
AM: The transfer window was a dismal one for the club, with was poetically summed up by the dreadful deadline day. We missed out of Salah, Konoplyanka and I am sure a lot of unknown targets as well. With the thin squad, Rodgers needed to make more additions and he was trying throughout. However, it did not happen. Ian Ayre and the committee have really angered the fans.
But personally, I don’t see that that would do anything with the on-field performances directly. Yes, I would like to see a better squad and not two academy players on the bench in a big match against Chelsea. But I feel as this could positively transpire for the club. The remainder of the squad is doing whatever it can to get the club to the top 4 spots. For Liverpool, a lot hangs on this- Luis Suarez, pride etc. Also, one can’t miss the fact that the Reds have had convincing performances and have won matches in the absence of Suarez, Sturridge, Gerrard and Coutinho.
DM:Ai??Tactically speaking, how major is Lucas’s loss in the middle? Gerrard-Henderson has been the main target area for opponent teams to take advantage of, and with Arsenal’s quality in the middle 3rd, do you feel this could decide the match?
AM: A player like Lucas’s importance is usually noted in his absence and that is exactly what is happening for Liverpool right now. Gerrard has been playing the deeper role at the moment and it looks like Stevie is going to be there for a while now, with or without Lucas. His first performance in the defensive position was very average. But he has really stepped up since and has had two very solid performances. Henderson, as you know, has had an amazing season so far and has also really proven why he was rated so highly at such a young age.
But compared to the quality in Arsenal’s midfield, I do feel Arsenal edge out Liverpool completely. I don’t think this would necessarily cost Liverpool the match, or decide it per se, but yes, it would be a vital advantage for Arsenal and I am sure Wenger understands that and will strategize his team in the manner to target our vulnerable heart of the pitch.
DM:Ai??Do you feel finishing 5th or below could be catastrophic for the club this season? Rodgers has taken Liverpool leaps and bounds forward this season, but if Liverpool don’t end up playing Champions League football, surely eyebrows will be raised and the manager’s position becomes slightly slippery? What do you make of the entire situation?
AM: Liverpool’s absence from ‘elite football’ has been for too long now. Its been too long since fans have been saying ‘Next season is our season’. This season is our season and all the Kop faithful are positive Rodgers is going to take us where we rightfully belong.Ai??Liverpool can’t afford to miss it. Catastrophic is the right word if Rodgers and co. won’t get there this time. I don’t think Rodgers would be sacked if Liverpool miss out by virtue of United winning the CL (we can’t rule out that possibility), or by the club finishing fifth. But anything below and I think he would, or maybe should, be shown the door.
DM:Ai??Finally and lastly, how do you rate this Arsenal side and can you see Suarez performing to his best in a big game? A final scoreline prediction?
AM: Well, I think this Arsenal side is the strongest it has been in over three-four years. And personally, I am tipping the Gunners along with City to take away the league this time.
Suarez has been a miss in the big matches but barring the one against Arsenal, he has really performed in all the big ones, but has missed out on the goal. He certainly has the credentials to score against any defence and any team, and I think he would be itching to break the lull against Arsenal. For this particular game, I feel Arsenal do have a few outs in injuries which could get us some advantage, but again so do we, so it pretty much evens out. I would also go for a 2-2, in a spicy match which should be contested till the last minute.
