Liverpool win their eighth game on the run with a convincing 4-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur and go on top of the league.
Liverpool stretched their winning run to eight games with a double over Tottenham Hotspur. The visitors were demolished in a solid display by the Reds, with the eventual scoreline reading 4-0.
The platform for Liverpool to top the league was perfectly set up with Chelsea losing to Crystal Palace and Manchester City drawing to Arsenal. The Reds needed to make sure Spurs don’t cause an upset and walk away with any points from Anfield. Brendan Rodgers’ men didn’t disappoint and eventually it turned out to be quite a comfortable win for them, with the club also registering a clean sheet, something they have not been able to in a while.
Liverpool were gifted the lead in the second minute itself after Glen Johnson’s low cross finding the back heel of Spurs captain Younes Kaboul and resulting in a very unlucky own goal for the Lilywhites. Luis Suarez then put his trademark on the game and the second half ended in a 2-0 scoreline. Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson scored in the second half and Liverpool ended the match 4-0 and on top of the table.
Brendan Rodgers was delighted by his side’s performance:
“To perform like we did from the first whistle it was an immense performance and I am very proud of the them today,” he continued.
“We are very confident with how we play, a lot was made the other night [against Sunderland] of us being anxious but that was not it, today Tottenham had a spell similar to Sunderland but the difference is we were 4-0 up today and not 2-1, but the confidence in how the players pass the ball, the intensity, they are very calm and focussed on the job and it was a wonderful team performance.
“It is credit to the players, the mentality in each game, we have shown over the course of the season the flexibility in the team – we have a played a 4-4-2 diamond in recent games today but today it was back to 4-3-3 but with two strikers up-field with one side open – so that is credit to them the flexibility and the ideas we have in games, but everyone knows their job and when to press.”
“It was a great performance but Tottenham have some outstanding players. They are a great club and I hope Tim gets the time to put some of his ideas in place and if they give him that time I am sure they will do very well.”
The Liverpool manager maintained that his side needs to be focused for the next match:
“In terms of ourselves that can only be our concentration. There are some big opponents in this league, you can’t worry yourself about other teams,” he insisted.
“Our next job, and my next job, is to analyse West Ham [Liverpool’s next opponents] and that is our focus.
“We have won eight games in-a-row and we are enjoying it, we will just enjoy it as it is a fantastic performance and now we just concentrate on the victory and concentrate on next week’s game.”
Liverpool have been time and again considered title contenders but Rodgers again played down title-talk:
“The dream is for our supporters, they want to win the title – but it is not in my thinking, my thinking it is to prepare the team and perform well and if we do that we can continue to win games and then we can see where that takes it,”
“It is a monumental size of club and when we have that support behind us it is a real force and the supporters recognise how hard we are working and hopefully that takes us a long way.”
