Liverpool are pondering over a move to bring Valencia defender Antonio Barragan back to the club
Reports suggest that Liverpool are monitoring former defender Antonio Barragan who has impressed this season for Valencia, and are going to make a move for him in the summer.
The Spanish right-back was raised by Sevilla, but before he had even come close to making his first-team debut he refused a contract offer from the club as Liverpool had been preparing to make a move for him for the last six months. The Reds capitalized on the FIFA rules regarding young players who did not have professional contracts and captured him, but paid a compensation fee ofAi??A?240,000.
The defender had high hopes attached with him and it came as a shock that the club, rather surprisingly, decided to sell the full back after him only managing a singular senior appearance. He was sold toAi??Deportivo de La CoruAi??a, for a sum of ai??i??1 million.Ai?? Barragan’s current Valencia contract runs until the end of June 2015. He has made 15 appearances for his club this season and has managed four assists as well.
Reports talk of the Merseyside club being impressed with what they see in their former player. Brendan Rodger’s side seems keen to re-sign him, and are said to be following him closely. However, Pizzi has faith in the player and it look difficult that Los Che will decide to sell the player.
Barragan is an exciting prospect for the club as the player clearly possesses all the right attributes needed in a defender. He holds on to the ball well, does not lose it cheaply, does not easily dive into a tackle and is accurate with his passing. He also makes numerous crosses during the course of the match which suggest that he has considerable attacking flair as well. BarraganAi??can also play as right winger, central defender a right wingback. In fact, in Valencia’s last match in the league, he played as a right winger and grabbed an assist in the 5-0 rout of Real Betis. This was probably the 26 year old’s most impressive performance of the season.
Liverpool need defensive additions in the summer, as can he by the vulnerabilities shown in the back for the Reds. Glen Johnson’s future is unclear at the moment with Real Madrid said to be making a move for the England full back. Hence, a move for Barragan would be a good way to start revamping the back line. He already has a basic feel of the Merseyside club, having spent an year with them, and hence won’t take long to adjust to life in Liverpool. The player’s market value is said to be in a region of ai??i??2m and for the talent he has, that seems like a bargain for Pizzi’s priced possession.
THT Verdict- Can’t Rule It Out
While its not often the case that a reunion occurs, this would not even seem like one as Barragan has not spent enough time with the club and the senior side. However, the player is certainly a talent who can surprise anyone on a good day. This season, he has had many such days where he has completely astounded watchers with his game. Barragan is said to have many watchers and a sum ofAi??ai??i??2m would not dishearten the Anfield outfit. Even if they get the player in the region ofAi??ai??i??6m, it should be considered a reasonable one as the 26 year old has the qualities to directly fit in the first team. It remains to be seen, if Spanish reports are correct and Liverpool are actually considering moving for the player who was brought in by Rafa Benitez.
