Ai??Portuguese newspaper A Bola report that Liverpool FC is interested in signing Benfica’s Maxi Pereira
The Uruguayan right back is available on a free in the summer, and the paper claims that Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is monitoring the 30-year-old in an attempt to strengthen the back line.
Pereira joinedAi??Ai??BenficaAi??in 2007 and is in his eighth season with the club. In this process, he has gone on to make over 300 official appearances for the side and has also won six major titles. He has also made 95 appearances for Uruguay.
Liverpool got Javier Manquillo from Atletico Madrid in the summer, on a two year loan, and the 20 year old has done a fantastic job in the position. However, the other options currently remain Glen Johnson, who is just not that good anymore, having also lost his England berth to Nathaniel Clyne; and Jon Flanagan, who is currently out injured. In the current situation, Manquillo is having to play up to three matches in seven days, and naturally, Brendan Rodgers has to rest him from time to time. When he does rest the Spaniard, the alternative is Glen Johnson who doesn’t do a good job in the position. Despite Jon Flanagan’s imminent return, it would be a good option to go out and get someone to cover that position and the experienced Pereira seems like the right way to go.
It is claimed Pereira wants to pen an extension but his agent is pushing for better terms and neither party show any sign of budging, which has opened the door for Liverpool. In the current situation,Ai??Liverpool are likely to spend very little if they sign him in the winter.

A move to Italy might be best for the former Chelsea player, who currently seems a little unwanted at Anfield. With Rudi Garcia’s side, he would be moving to a top team, competing at the highest level and in European competitions, and should be seeing more of the ball than he is doing presently at Merseyside.
