West Brom striker and Liverpool FC target Saido Berahino earned an England call-up as Roy Hodgson named his squad for the upcoming Euro 2016 qualifier against Slovenia.
21-year-old Saido Berahino was called up by England manager Roy Hodgson and could very well make his debut in the Euro 2016 qualifier with Slovenia on 15 November or the friendly against Scotland on 18th of this month.
The West Brom striker has been in sensational form this season and has already scored seven goals, in ten matches, for the Baggies in the league. His form has attracted interest from Merseysiders Liverpool FC.
Berahino was born in Burundi, but chose to represent the nation he was brought up in.Ai??The 21 year old has made appearances at various youth levels for England and represented England at the 2010 UEFA European Under-17 Championship contributing one goal as England won the tournament.
“I’m sure Saido will come wanting to play, but he faces stiff competition and he understands that. He’s not just there for the learning process, but he hasn’t made it to Wayne Rooney status,” said the England manager.
Manchester United’s Michael Carrick, who recently returned from an ankle injury that kept him out of the World Cup squad in Brazil has made a come-back for the Three Lions. Former Liverpool winger Stewart Downing also makes a comeback to the team as he has been an instrumental figure in West Ham’s successful season. He has been employed centrally by Sam Allardyce and this has enabled him to be a bigger attacking threat than he has been in the recent part. His last cap for England came in 2012.
Arsenal winger Theo Walcott is recalled to the squad after recovering from a knee injury that kept him out for 10 months. He too missed out on the World Cup and his return from injury gives Roy Hodgson a good number of attacking options.
Raheem Sterling was again selected by Hodgson. Last time, the Liverpool youngster was embroiled in the ‘tired’ controversy surrounding his club and country. Sterling’s form has taken a slight dip ever since, but he would hope to make a big impact for his nation this time out.
Hodgson spoke about the player, “I speak to Raheem all the time and as far as I’m concerned that chapter is over. I have nothing to say or add to that.Ai??I have great respect for Raheem and agree with Steven Gerrard that he will do wonderful things for England.”
Club-mate Glen Johnson has been left out, despite returning to action last month following a thigh injury. Nathaniel Clyne did well slotting in as a right back last time out, and his good form for Southampton meant that Hodgson could not drop him despite experienced Johnson’s return.
Wayne Rooney can earn his 100th cap against Slovenia.
