Liverpool FC will and must hurt after creating for themselves a fine opportunity to win the Premier League title and letting it slip, but must also acknowledge their phenomenal effort this season and continue to do the right things moving forward.
Let’s not dress this up – Liverpool created a fine opportunity for themselves to win the Premier League title. Defeating 4 of the Top 6 teams in the Barclays Premier League during an unbeaten run in 2014, in what were seen as tough tests at home meant that Liverpool had their finest opportunity to win a League title in years. And then they let it slip. Football is a cruel game. Many may be deserving, but there can be only one winner. Liverpool have had a fabulous season and are worthy of whatever success they have had this season; but if it reaches a less than perfect end, they will have no one but themselves to blame.
So what is the end of season verdict for Liverpool?
If you told a Liverpool supporter that the Reds would walk into Anfield on May 11 against Newcastle with a mathematical chance to win the title, he/she would have laughed you out of the room. Given the initial doubts about Brendan Rodgers’ ability as a manager, a terrible start to the 2012-13 season, Luis Suarez wanting out of Anfield and a 7th place finish in the league, most supporters only expected a sustained push for a place in the Top 4 with the hope that Liverpool would somehow sneak in. TheHardTackle put the Reds down for 5th place, citing that improvement in league position is a definite possibility, but that Champions League football may be a step too far.
What’s funny, though, is that the very same Liverpool supporters who would’ve laughed at the odds of going into the final day with 81 points on the board are the ones that shed tears at as Liverpool blew a three-goal lead at Selhurst Park on Monday night. Football is a beautiful game. But it is also brutal. Given that winning the Premier League title was a genuine possibility until less than two weeks ago, the fact that Liverpool supporters are disappointed rather than elated at being in the Top 2 at the start of May should mean that the 2013-14 season is a resounding success. Do not forget that Liverpool were nothing more than an afterthought a year ago, finishing the season 28 points behind champions Manchester United.
Did Liverpool get lucky?
Given that not many looked at Liverpool as likely to make their way into the Top 4, let alone challenge for the Premier League title, it looks like the “media love-in” that accompanied the Reds’ 16 match unbeaten streak has now given way to school of thought that Liverpool have been more lucky than good.
All said and done, ‘The Special One’ returning to Chelsea surely should have made it a matter of when rather than if Chelsea would win a league title. Moreover, Jose Mourinho had never in his career lost a league title after being on top at the start of March – until this season. Arsenal, on the other hand, had finally spent big (read, Mesut Ozil) and for once did spend the summer worrying about their best players being poached by other clubs.Ai??One can still count Manchester United as unlucky to lose Sir Alex Ferguson, but the fact that the matter of succession was handled in such a shoddy manner was their own fault. Even so, the fact that they retained the squad that won the league in a canter last season, added to the fact that Jose Mourinho was willing to sell Juan Mata to them in the middle of the season should have meant that they would make a run at the Top 4 at Liverpool’s expense. Right?
We haven’t even mentioned that Tottenham Hotspur’s A?100m worth of recruits was supposed to turn them into title contenders.
The only reason this was Liverpool’s finest opportunity to win a Premier League title in years was because of the Reds creating that opportunity for themselves. Until Chelsea did so on April 27, not one team in the Premier League succeeded in defeating Liverpool in the current calendar year. Going on a four-month long unbeaten streak takes some doing, and you are bound to score a lot of points on the way.
Also, to suggest that Liverpool’s form this season has only been due to the fact that they were not in the Champions League is to correlate the two just because it suits the argument. Participation in the Champions League was seen to be the ticket to financial riches and a place at high society among clubs in Europe. It was arguably the reason why Liverpool went through a transfer window where they (just like Manchester United) were rejected by one transfer target after another. If playing in the Champions League was such a burden, Liverpool would have made it to Europe two seasons under Kenny Dalglish.
It is convenient to argue that all the progress Liverpool have made would fall apart just because they are playing in the Champions League (more matches after all), but surely the Reds would have better players than Victor Moses coming on to play the 10 most important minutes of the season. Even if they don’t, there is no way the club hierarchy would choose to go through an entire season using just 13-15 players on a regular basis if there was European football to deal with.
Everything said and done, the likes of Manchester City would surely spend more money, Chelsea would finally play with a striker up front, and Manchester United may well have the ‘proper manager’ that they are looking for. To discount the possibility of Liverpool entering the new season with a stronger squad is convenient and foolish in equal measure. The chances of another title challenge in 2014-15 could be as remote as it was this season, but Liverpool will not give up their place in the Top 4 so easily.
What about next season?
When Brendan Rodgers joined Liverpool two years ago, the common theme that he spelled out throughout the season was that of progress. Having succeeded in improving upon an 8th place finish (albeit 7th in 2012-13), he continued to state that further progress was the objective.
Improvement of players within the squad has been the key to Liverpool’s improvement in league position, and more importantly, over the course of the season. The likes of Daniel Sturridge, Jordan Henderson and Jon Flanagan have improved beyond recognition when most people had either dismissed them as selfish, not good enough or not worth thinking about. It shows the hunger of many members of Liverpool’s squad, while showcasing the ability of Brendan Rodgers to improve players.
Steve Peters is another whose work at Liverpool has gone relatively unnoticed. The Middlesbrough-born sports psychiatrist has worked in the past with British cycling and with Ronnie O’Sullivan to great success. However, the events on Monday night where Ronnie O’Sullivan and Liverpool both blew away big leads within the space of 23 minutes makes it clear that seeing Dr Steve Peters does not make you invincible. Although Peters primary expertise is away from the field despite working with those who play in it, he will be part of the effort of all the staff to lift the players up from what has been a harrowing few days.
Achieving the objective of making it to the Champions League is one thing, but even if Liverpool were to somehow benefit from a huge slice of luck to win the league on Sunday, the work Brendan Rodgers, the coaching staff and the players does not stop there. As Manchester United’s spectacular fall from the top this season has shown, maintaining the high level of consistency will be the key to Liverpool’s fortunes next year. It isn’t a destination, it is a continuous journey.
In a strange way, missing out on the title after coming so close could actually be a blessing in disguise. A title win is always welcome (of course, who wouldn’t want one), but falling short this season could end up driving the players to make amends in some form or the other. It also helps to have a manager who has a definite philosophy, yet is not completely set in his own ways. Brendan Rodgers has learnt and learned quickly ever since he joined Liverpool FC, and will continue to do so as time passes.
What about Sunday?
Liverpool are still not mathematically out of the race for the title. It may be highly unlikely, but the Reds could do no harm by winning against Newcastle United to ensure that they do the bare minimum of giving themselves a chance. Newcastle, despite their horrendous run of form of late, will not be visiting Anfield to make the numbers. The home support, however, has been fantastic all season; and there would be no way to sign off on a great season by getting three points minus the chaos that took place on Monday night.
If Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing helped Liverpool win the Premier League, however, it would be the mother of all twists.
