The 24 year old had been a long summer pursuit for Manchester United and was widely believed to be heading over to Old Trafford in the summer. Brendan Rodgers wants to bring in the talented midfielder this summer, and knows that he would have a massive up over United, who are still chasing him, with the Champions League football they would in all probabilty offer him.
Herrera is playing his third season for Bilbao and has featured in the club’s Europa League and Copa del Rey campaigns and has over a hundred appearances to his name. The La Liga club has enjoyed a decent spell in the league this season as they sit in the fourth place in the league, behindAi??Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona and Herrera is a major contributor to that.

The 23 year old is having a fine season for his club, and his fine performances have attracted some big names to him and Liverpool and Barcelona look to be the front runners for his signature. The player was also linked with a move to Manchester United in the winter but the deal did not materialize.
Manager Brendan Rodgers knows that defensive vulnerabilities have costed the Reds quite a bit this season, despite their good run and would be hoping that this trend does not continue in the next campaign. Especially with the club possibly competing in the Champions League. The club would also need more depth in the department as they would be playing in four competitions if they get to be part of the elite competition next season. Both the players are going to not come in cheap for the Merseyside club. And with so many suitors for both Herrera and Musacchio, they are not even going to be able to bring either the midfielder or defender for a negotiated amount. Rodgers is supposedly going to get a 60 million pounds war-chest for the summer, if the club qualifies for the Champions League. It is unlikely that he spends almost the entire amount on the two, when he also has more areas- left winger, full back- to target. Thus these reports seem unlikely to materialize. However, if this does happen, Liverpool would be benefiting from the addition of two young, quality and already very established players.
