Liverpool are eyeing Sunderland in-form man Adam Johnson for the summer, according to reports, and the player might come to Anfield in a deal which will see that Liverpool on loan man Fabio Borini make his stay permanent at Sunderland.
Johnson signed a four-year deal at Sunderland in 2012 after making a A?10m move from Manchester City.Ai??The present Sunderland player cost around A?7m when City signed him from Middlesbrough in 2010, but was not used much under Mancini and became pretty much surplus to requirements.
Johnson has been in roaring form for Sunderland recently and has proven that with his latest goal tally of six goals in the last four games. His recent form has not only helped Sunderland climb out of the relegation spots, but has also sparked rumors of the player being part of Roy Hodgson’s World Cup plans.
Fabio Borini, the player who might be used to make way for the ex-City man, has had a torrid time with Liverpool since his arrival at the club last season. The player failed to help the club and did not establish himself as a quality striker in his first season, but did start looking better towards the end of last season. However, with Daniel Sturridge’s arrival, Borini was reduced to the substitute bench. Rodgers decided to send him out on loan to get the best out of the player and settle him at England, and it seems like the Italian is doing that well under Gus Poyet. BoriniAi??has been showed some decent form of late, picking up five goals and three assists in 24 appearances (8 of which have been substitute appearances) in all competitions for the Sunderland. It also included the equaliser against Chelsea in the League Cup in a match where Poyet’s side sent Jose Mourinho’s team out of the domestic competition.
THT Verdict- Not Likely
Adam Johnson is certainly a fine player, who is showing the world exactly what the initial hype around him was for recently, but it seems highly unlikely that the management and owners of Liverpool Football Club, FSG, would go for a player who is 26 years old, and would be turning 27 in July. Johnson is a winger and Liverpool certainly require width in their game but the player prefers to play on the right and it would be likelier that Liverpool went for a man who would be a left winger primarily, with the adaptibilty to shift flanks. Raheem Sterling is the present first choice right winger for the Liverpool side and with the youngster’s present form, it seems unlikely that the club would get it another player, 7 years senior, to replace him from his first choice spot.
Fabio Borini too might be part of Rodgers’s next year squad plans, especially if Liverpool do manage to qualify for the Champions League. The Liverpool manager would need a larger squad and obviously is of the opinion that Borini could bloom into a quality player eventually. The ex-Roma forward has also impressed at Sunderland this season and there is no reason to think that the player’s time at Anfield is over. Another thing which Rodgers will have in mind is that the Italian is only 22 years old and has the advantage of age on his side. The Liverpool boss would look at Jordan Henderson to see that patience can get the quality out of a player. Borini has had game time at Sunderland and therefore might just be part of the Liverpool squad next season.
