The absence of Daniel Sturridge can prove to be quite a blow for Liverpool. Brendan Rodgers would have been hoping that his side could start gaining momentum after the convincing 3-0 win over Spurs.
After the end of the very busy summer transfer window, the Liverpool boss needs to start playing his preferred 11 so that the team can start getting accustomed to playing together as they look to compete in four competitions and as Steven Gerrard put it, definitely win some silverware this season. The much awaited return of Adam Lallana got Liverpool fans excited as Rodgers could finally field his strongest 11, but with Daniel Sturridge likely to be ruled for some time with an injury sustained in the international break (again), it seems that the Liverpool boss will have to shuffle his attack again to find his best alternative combination.
Liverpool have done tremendously well with the 4-4-2 diamond formation. The team thrives while playing two strikers up-front and Raheem Sterling seems to have the world at his feet while playing at the tip of the diamond. Against Southampton and Manchester City, the Merseyside club immediately made an impact when a second striker in the form of Rickie Lambert was introduced and the team shifted from a 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2.
The debut of Mario Balotelli against Spurs was promising and no doubt exciting. Even though the Italian should have put away at least one of the chances that came his way, what was especially encouraging in that performance was Balotelli’s work rate. The 24 year old was regularly tracking back, helping his side out in defence and linking up with Sterling and Sturridge.
Brendan Rodgers has some options now that Balotelli is here. Using the 4-4-2 would be the obvious thing to do since the formation has worked so well for the Reds in the recent past. Balotelli would definitely start up-front partnering Rickie Lambert, who might get to start a game for his new club and the two summer signings may well perhaps be seen leading Liverpool’s attack. The other option for Rodgers would be utilizing Fabio Borini. The Italian’s reluctance to leave last season’s Premier League runners up might pay dividend as early as the first match after the transfer window shut. Even if Borini doesn’t start the games in Sturridge’s absence, having another decent back-up on the bench only has upsides.
The return of Liverpool’s most expensive summer signing Adam Lallana would mean that Joe Allen gets dropped to the bench. Allen has been one of the most consistent performers for Liverpool so far in the season but Lallana would substitute him as Jordan Henderson has been an indispensableAi??part of Rodgers’ unit in the last one year, and rightly so. However, Henderson picked up a slight knock while training for England, and in case he is ruled out, Lallana would automatically replace him.
Raheem Sterling, as mentioned before has been thriving in the number 10 role, and hence Philippe Coutinho is likely to be on the bench again. For some, the Brazilian should be a sure starter for Liverpool, but with the form Sterling is in, there is no doubt as to who gets the nod.
Steven Gerrard has been unconvincing in all three games for Liverpool this season, but it seems that Brendan Rodgers is not willing to drop the Liverpool captain. Perhaps Joe Allen or Emre Can should be used in the holding role, and Gerrard should start games from time to time, but not be a sure-starter in every game, and this is something which doesn’t look like it will happen. In the defence, the back four will remain unchanged till Skrtel regains full fitness, in which case he will displace Sakho.
The other way Liverpool could go is the 4-3-3 formation. This means that the Reds will only start with Mario Balotelli as their striker. While the 4-3-3 is not a desirable option when Sturridge is leading the line for you, this might work with Balotelli. In the case of the Englishman, why this formation doesn’t give results is because of the player’s tendency to drift to the right and create width for the team. This results in Sterling and Coutinho making forward runs into the box but both the players don’t create the final result. Coutinho looks lost when he is employed on the left and Sterling has to get the benefit for being 19 and still improving in that department.
However, with Balotelli, Rodgers might see an out-and-out striker who will stay in the box and feed off the attackers creating chances for him. Raheem Sterling will undoubtedly start on the right wing. However, in case of this formation the big question will be who starts on the left flank. Lazar Markovic looks like Liverpool’s best bet. The youngster showed glimpses of his class in his cameo against Manchester City. He did well playing for Serbia against France and might be ready for a full debut. The 20 year old makes a lot of central runs and can help ease the work of Balotelli along with linking up with him. He could also operate on the right which would see Sterling starting from the left.
Coutinho might start on the left and if the games against Saints and City are anything to go by, this would not be beneficial for the team. The Brazilian doesn’t contribute much from the flank and is also lazy defensively, something that puts the players behind him in an awkward position. The good thing however is that Adam Lallana would be the player behind him this time. The Englishman could ease pressure off Coutinho and the two might have good chemistry. The outside bet is Fabio Borini starting as the left winger. He played this role for Sunderland numerous times last season and did well. Hence, this also remains a possibility.
The midfield will comprise of Gerrard in the holding role and Henderson and Lallana playing centrally, contributing in both defence and attack. The back 4 would remain the same.
It remains to be seen which formation, and which players, Rodgers will go with. The diamond formation seems like a better option, when Liverpool’s style of play is put under the microscope. But the Reds boss might not want to start either one of Lambert or Borini and use the 4-3-3 instead. The good thing for the Merseyside club is that they finally have enough players to get experimental with.
Remember, Jordan Henderson’s big game or the personal season-changing game was last season against Tottenham, when Gerrard was injured and the ex-Sunderland player was asked to control the midfield.Ai??While Daniel Sturridge’s injury comes as a huge blow, you never know who steps up to the occasion and proves to be the difference in the next few games.
