Liverpool have received a major boost as Daniel Sturridge returned to training.
The England international last featured for the Merseysiders on 31st August in a 3-0 win over Tottenham. He sustained a thigh injury training with England in the subsequent international break. He was expected to make a comeback about a month back, but on his first full training session after his return, he suffered from a calf strain.
Liverpool have suffered greatly in the past few weeks. The Reds are actually on a three match losing streak, lie 11th in the league and need to win both their remaining Champions League games to progress further in the European competition. One of Liverpool’s biggest problems has been the lack of goals. Mario Balotelli has not worked for the Merseysiders yet, and part of the reason is the fact that a single striker system doesn’t suit him or Liverpool.
The return of Sturridge would be great for Brendan Rodgers as he can also get the team back to the preferred diamond formation with two strikers up-front. Because of this, Raheem Sterling could also play in the whole behind the two strikers, a position he has recently become more dangerous in.
Sterling also said that Sturridge’s return could mark a comeback for the Reds.
“It will be a massive boost to have Daniel back playing,ai???Ai??Sterling told the Liverpool Echo.
ai???We have missed him and the more quality players you have fit and available the better.Ai??He gives us that threat in the box and he scores goals. Weai??i??re all really looking forward to having him back in the team.
“I have said that can’t be the case, it’s about the team. There is a collective responsibility. He is a top-end player, and hopefully he will go out and show that. He does make a difference, and they are the players that you need in your team. We hope he will be back for the next game and we will take it from there.”
The 24 year old should mark his return against Crystal Palace after missing 14 games ai??i?? and now the striker has confirmed he is back in training with the Reds. The striker tweeted:
