Liverpool are now alert as they see long term target Martin Montoya surplus to requirements at Camp Nou.
Barcelona boss Luis Enrique has reportedly told the 23-year-old defender that he is no more required with the Catalan giants and would be permitted to ply his trade elsewhere. Barcelona are looking to sell the defender, despite him having over four years left to run on his existing contract.
The right-back is likely to be available for cheap or on loan in January. This would definitely tempt the Reds who have been interested in him for a quite some time
Montoya has come through the youth system at Barca and has made 56 first-team appearances in all competitions, with 19 of them coming last season. With an impressive showing in the absence of Dani Alves, the Barcelona board got him toAi??extend his contract until June 30 2018 in March this year.Ai??He hasn’t been sent out on loan despite being extremely promising and ‘one for the future’.
He just has one appearance for his club this term (it came in the league) and it is clear that he is not needed at the club. Barcelona are therefore inviting suitors for the player.
According to reports in Spain, Inter Milan are also interested in his signature but the defender is said to favour a move to the Premier League.
Liverpool were linked with the player time and again in the previous windows and would be definitely interested in getting the 23 year old to Anfield. The Reds have taken Atletico Madrid’s 20 year old Javier Manquillo on loan for two years and the youngster has done incredibly well in the short campaign, proving his worth against the likes of Ronaldo, Samir Nasri etc. Liverpool’s first choice right back Glen Johnson’s contract expires next summer and it is unlikely that the Merseysiders will offer the player an extension. Johnson’s form has taken a huge dip and he is not at the level he was two or three years back. Jon Flanagan, the Liverpool academy graduate, is there and can play on both flanks.
