Liverpool FC 2014/15- Season To Consolidate For Brendan Rodgers And Co.

Lovren needs to be the leader Liverpool need

Liverpool enter this season with expectations from them. The club needs to remove the memories of the 13/14 campaign even though they showed amazing progress.

The contrast between how last season began and how this one is going to begin is there. The Reds made an unexpected title challenge last season, something which took everyone, including Liverpool fans by surprise. Now, the Merseyside camp has weight on its shoulder of having to follow it up with a good showing on all fronts this time. But the two editions are also similar because a majority of fans are writing Liverpool off before the start of the season because of the departure of Luis Suarez and theAi??summer dealsAi??that they have concluded so far.

Regardless, this is the season to consolidate. After a sizable gap, Liverpool put on such a convincing performance in the league. Finishing second, and that too by a margin of two points, is praiseworthy, especially when they finished the season prior to that at a dismal seventh, 28 points adrift of eventual champions – Manchester United. But what is the point of doing that, of getting back in the Champions League after five long seasons, if Brendan Rodgers’ side follows it up with another sixth or seventh placed finish? The effort Luis Suarez, Steven Gerrard, Daniel Sturridge, Raheem Sterling, Jordan Henderson, Philippe Coutinho and the others put in last season will go for an absolute waste if Liverpool don’t get consistent and make sure they’re never written off from the TopAi?? 4 in the near future, at least.

The Squad

Defence

New signing Lovren is expected to be a starter straight-away

Liverpool’s defence has been strengthened through the arrival of Dejan Lovren from Southampton. The Croatian international, who became Liverpoolai??i??s costliest defender, is expected to be a starter straight away and will possibly line up with Mamadou Sakho or Martin Skrtel. Defence was cited as Liverpool’s biggest weakness last season and the lack of a leader at the back (after Carragher’s departure and Rodger’s lack of willingness to use Daniel Agger).

Sebastian Coates, Tiago Ilori, Daniel Agger and Kolo Toure are the other centre back options for Liverpool at present. Coates, who looked set to leave the club after spending most of last season frustrated by injury, has had an astounding pre-season, which has impressed the manager and he might stay on with the club to fight for a place in the starting 11. Ilori is likely to be loaned out with Daniel Agger and Kolo Toure lookingAi??to beAi??departing soon.

At right back, Liverpool have Glen Johnson, new loan signing Javier Manquillo and last seasonai??i??s find, Jon Flanagan. The 20-year-old Manquillo is highly rated in Spain and was expected to be Juanfran’s long term natural successor at Atletico. Glen Johnson’s performances have been abysmal for some time andAi??youngsters Manquillo and Flanagan should be fighting for the first team spot right now. Glen Johnson should be used whenever experience is needed.Ai??The England InternationalAi??is not a bad option to have in the squad, but at present, he is not a goodAi??one to have in the starting 11.

The arrival of Alberto Moreno, which finally looks close, would mean that the Sevilla man would be the first choice for Rodgers at left-back. At present though, Liverpool’s first choice is Jose Enrique. The Spaniard got injured in November last season and spent the remaining time on the sidelines.Ai?? He has returned now and seems determined toAi??make an impact. Jon Flanagan impressed as a left back last season and Rodgers will have the choice of fielding him at that position too.

Simon Mignolet will remain Rodgersai??i?? first choice in goal. While he is a good goalkeeper, Rodgers needs someone, who can provide competition to the Belgian. Last season, Mignolet didnai??i??t prove extremely solid at the back and his catching and distribution skills were questioned a great deal. Pepe Reina expectedly left the club and has joined Bayern Munich as second choice to Manuel Neuer. His high wages have been cleared off theAi??books and Rodgers should look to bring a decent back-up goalkeeper to the side.

Midfield

Henderson has to take on from the spectacular form he left last season with

Captain Steven Gerrard retired from international duty recently and is going to be available for the Reds completely this season. His luck seemed to have run out last season (read: ‘that’ slip) as once again, he was unable to win the Premier League title. This is probably the last season, where he can contribute in every game. Gerrard was employed in the deeper role last season and he did well for himself alongside Jordan Henderson. Brendan Rodgers is likely to choose both his captain and young Henderson, who was as indispensable as Luis Suarez, in the midfield this time too. Adam Lallana is the other likely player to feature in the starting 11. He can be used in the midfield, on the wings and as a number 10, but it is more of a probability that the 26-year-old features along with Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson in the midfield to provide both flair as well as stability. His presence would help Hendersonai??i??s game as well and lessen his burden of having to take care of both the attack and provide resilience in the midfield.

Joe Allen started doing well for himself in the tail-end of the season and he is a good name to have in the squad, though for now, he will be ai???one of the optionsai??i?? for Rodgers and is expected to feature more in domestic cup matches. The future of Lucas Leiva is uncertain as the Brazilian seems surplus to needs at the Merseyside club right now.

Youngster Emre Can has the ability to increase the balance in the midfield but he will probably be used as a substitute initially. The defensive midfielder is capable at operating in a variety of positions and his versatility is going to be a huge benefit for Liverpool in the future. He has been very impressive in the pre-season tour and Rodgers is likely to use Can more and more as the season grows. Rodgers has the option of fielding Suso too. The youngster impressed in his time on-loan at Almeria. He has stated his desire to fight for a first team place but there is a possibility that he is sent out on-loan to Sevilla, in the deal for Alberto Moreno (these reports are dubious). For Rodgers, he is an excellent option to have within the ranks as he offers something different with his clever interchange and excellent through-balls from the midfield, something which was visible during his loan spell at Almeria. It is likely that we see both these youngsters in cup competitions.

Attack

Daniel Sturridge is going to be Rodgers’ key man in this edition

Daniel Sturridge will remain Liverpoolai??i??s first-choice striker next season. The addition of another striker is expected in the remaining window time as Divock Origi has been loaned back to Lille and Rickie Lambert has been brought in as a third choice striker. An old-fashioned striker was missed by the club last season, to unlock tight situations and offer something different and Lambert has been brought in to address that void. Therefore, one expects Rodgers to add another proven, prolific name soon, who could be starting alongside Sturridge or provide competition to the Englishman from the bench.

The high-profile sale of Luis Suarez has resulted in a considerable void in the highly attacking philosophy of Brendan Rodgers. The Northern Irishman understood that while Luis Suarez is irreplaceable – in all ways – his goals and assists are. Rodgers would hope that the likes of Lazar Markovic, Adam Lallana and another striker, who possibly comes in before the transfer window shuts, those goals can be aptly replaced.

Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling will both need to have a bigger impact this season and both are expected to. The two possess wonderful skills and have shown considerable maturity over some time now. Both of them are expected to start in the current line-up. Lazar Markovic was brought in from Benfica last month. He too, is an exceptional talent and can be employed anywhere in the attack. He is likely to compete with Raheem Sterling for a starting spot in the coming months and ensure complacency doesnai??i??t set in within the attackers. It is likely we see him feature in cup competitions initially. Adam Lallana, as mentioned before, can be played in the attack on the wings or right behind the striker. Youngster Jordan Ibe shone in the pre-season and Liverpudlians know all about his talent and potential, but it is likely that Rodgers will send him out on loan to gain some match experience.

Transfer Summary

Liverpool’s transfer dealings so far

Tactics

With the squad Liverpool have at the moment, this is the lineup Brendan Rodgers is likely to go with.

Liverpool are expected to play either the 4-3-3 or the 4-4-2 diamond formation this season. However, till the side doesnai??i??t bring in a prolific, proven striker, the second option is not an option. In the 4-3-3 formation, the defence is likely to comprise Johnson or Manquillo at right back, Lovren and Sakho/Skrtel at centre back (Sakho is a better bet for Rodgers but pre-season has indicated that the manager will probably start Lovren with Skrtel in the defence) and Enrique (till Moreno deal is not finalized) at left back. Simon Mingolet would start in goal .

The midfield should have Gerrard playing his new regista role with Henderson and Lallana playing up-front. Lallana is presently out with injury and might not appear in the first two games, and in that case we might see one of Can, Lucas or Allen getting the start.

Raheem Sterling was brilliant last season, and while he is a winger, he did exceptionally well as a number 10. In a recent interview, he stated his desire to continue behind the striker. It is up to Rodgers as toAi??where he deploys the young Englishman, but in a 4-3-3 formation, he is likely to take a familiar spot in the right flank. Philippe Coutinho, the traditional number 10, would probably play on the left wing, something he did at the start of last season as well. However, those performances from the wing were far from convincing and increased the burden on Enrique at the time. With Lallana in the picture, who will probably be operating on that side of the midfield, the burden on Coutinho will be lesser and he will be cutting inside and doing his traditional job. But Lallana is injured at the moment, andAi??the time period of hisAi??absence is uncertain. Thus, this could prove to be a problem for the Reds at the start of the season. Lazar Markovic, is a natural left winger, and can be used by Rodgers in that worrisome spot, but he too, is suffering from a niggle at the moment and his involvement in the first team straight away is not certain. The left wing spot has always been a worrisome spot for the Reds. The likes of Yevhen Konoplyanka and Mohamed Salah were targeted last season. Liverpool are still linked with Xherdan Shaqiri and Enquiel Lavezzi, but it is doubtful that Rodgers is going to add another winger to the squad now.

Daniel Sturridge would start as the lone striker. But the Liverpool side that did so well with two strikers might be tempted of continuing to play a strike partnership. In that case, we will see a diamond formation being employed by Brendan Rodgers. Regardless, the addition of another striker is a must.

Coutinho can do better outside the shadow of Suarez

Player to look out for: Philippe Coutinho

The little Brazilianai??i??s is mesmerizing to watch when on song. Last season, he did well but was always in the shadow of Luis Suarez. Now that the Uruguayan has gone, he is expected to play a much larger part for the Reds. He has done incredibly well in the pre-season and given the supporters some mouth-watering moments with his skills on the ball. He was disappointed at not being picked by Scolari for his sideai??i??s World Cup campaignAi??and needs to channelize that disappointment in the right way. Brendan Rodgers has echoed similar statements. The one place where he needs to improve is his finishing, which is leaves a lot to be desired. The Brazilian ai???Ferrariai??i?? could prove to be a key player in Liverpoolai??i??s coming season.

Predictions

League: Competition is high this time and we will see City, United (who look amazingly revitalized after a dismal season), Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool and Everton compete for the top 4 places with Newcastle (who have done good work on the transfer front) and Saints being the outside contenders for a top 6 finish. Brendan Rodgers has to ensure that the side focuses on stability and targets to keep a Champions League berth next season.

Prediction: 4th placed finish

Champions league: The Reds make their return to the Champions League after a hiatus. Anfield European nights were missed and Rodgers would hope to give the supporters something to cheer about in this comeback. It is going to obviously be tough, but the strengthened Liverpool side looks like it could or should advance till the knockout stage.

Prediction: Round of 16

FA Cup/League Cup: Depending on the situation in the league and the Champions League through half the season, it would make sense to assess if a domestic cup should be targeted. But this is Brendan Rodgersai??i?? third season in charge and he would want to get some sort of silverware at the end of the campaign.

Prediction: Quarter Finals
