Milan overcame a troublesome period to record their second successive victory while Roma kept the pressure with a timely victory. Fiorentina were held while Napoli defeated Juventus at home. All this and more in our weekly coverage.
This past week has not been one of the best for AC Milan or their fans. However, the victory over Fiorentina came at the right time when the team was seeking for something to boost their flagging morale. Faced with relegation-threatened Chievo, Milan had the perfect chance to continue their revival and in general improve the overall atmosphere in and around Milanello. With the club already out of Europe, wins in Serie A will be only source of joy coming their way this season. Balotelli – the much criticized Italian who is always at the center of the storm, started this match as the lone striker as Pazzini looked on despondently from the sidelines. Minutes later, he proved his effectiveness when he converted Rami’s cross to bulge the back of the net. Milan were on the attack throughout and their efforts were rewarded when Kaka chested down Honda’s cross to score Milan’s second of the night. Of all the midfielders playing, Honda was the most wasteful and also the least effective. The Japanese has yet to integrate himself completely with Italian football and his finishing has to improve by leaps and bounds. Faced with an incredible opportunity to even increase Milan’s lead further, Honda spooned his shot over the bar, when set clear by Balotelli. Milan entered the break without barely breaking into a sweat and soon increased their lead at the beginning of the second half. Kaka’s fine curling effort increased Milan’s lead further. It was also a personal milestone for the Brazilian as he scored in his 300th appearance for the club. More than the victory, what must have pleased Seedorf was the second consecutive clean sheet.
Roma then visited Stadio Citta del Tricoloreto to face off against relegation-threatened Sassuolo. The home side had won only once in their past 12 matches and the visiting Romans did not make their lives any simpler. Roma had other ambitions from this match – the most important of them obviously being to close the gap with the leaders and current champions, Juventus. Destro had two superb chances to open the scoring for the visitors but were thwarted by some vital tackling and lack of ability to finish. However, he made amends soon after with a delicate chip over the onrushing Pegolo. Destro had many chances to increase the lead but proved to be quite wasteful. Nicola Rizzoli, the referee was at the center of penalty controversy and play was upheld for quite some time before he reversed his decisions, being surrounded by Roma players. Bastos scored Roma’s second of the match in the dying minutes of the match from a Taddei through ball. Although Sassuolo were able to steal the ball away from Roma on multiple occasion, they were extremely poor in finishing and committed a high number of individual errors. Roma, on the other hand, created most of their chances via through balls as they favored to attack down the left side, playing a short passing game of football.
Elsewhere, Lazio took on Parma in a battle to play in Europe next season. Parma are one point off Internazionale, who lie fifth in the Serie A table and presently occupy the last spot for Europe. Parma’s unbeaten run of 17 matches came to an abrupt halt in the previous match day to Juventus and the visitors were hell bent on stopping a repeat of the previous result. Both Lazio and Parma created a high number of chances with the home side making the most of their opportunities. While Lazio favored long shots to attack the Parma goal, the visitors depended mostly on individual skills. The first half saw two goals being scored, with Lulic and Biabiany scoring. While Klose doubled their lead midway through the second half, an own goal from Caini handed the initiative somewhat to the visitors. Candreva had the last laugh when he slotted home past Mirante to condemn Parma to their second successive loss.
Over at San Paolo, a charged-up Napoli side took on the champions, Juventus. After all the mind games on the sidelines from both the coaches, it was finally time to showcase whether they can actually pull off what their coaches were bragging about. Juventus were heading into this fixture on the back of 22 unbeaten games in Serie A, while Napoli, who are lying third in the table, looking to reduce the gap. Tevez was suspended for this match, and his absence was clearly felt by the visitors, who opted to start with Osvaldo. Napoli attacked from the word go with Callejon doing most of the shooting. His efforts bore fruit and soon the ball was in the back of Juventus’ net. Conte tried to shake things up with his substitutions but none other than Vucinic made any real impact in the game. Mertens then wrapped up what would be a famous win by shooting in the top corner. Juventus were poor in attack and their players were caught offside on multiple occasion but what would bother them the most is their somewhat overdependence on Carlito.
The last action of the match day took us to the Armando Picchi, where Livorno took on Inter. Winless in their last two encounters, the pressure was definitely more on Mazzarri than on anyone else. Hernanes scored his first goal for Inter and before the first half ended, Palacio doubled the lead. Betanin pulled one back for the home side and while Inter had many chances to close off the game, they proved quite wasteful in converting their chances. Guarin was the main culprit for the equalizer as his back pass found Emeghara, who slotted past Handanovic, thereby stopping Inter from claiming anything other than a solitary point from this match.
