Aston Villa midfielder Fabian Delph, who was the only fitness concern for the England squad is available for selection against San Marino, confirmed Roy Hodgson.
Hodgson now has a fully fit squad to choose from for tomorrowai??i??s European Championship qualifier.
“We’ve been lucky with injuries,” Hodgson told a press conference. “Fabian Delph, we spared from yesterday’s training because he took a knock at the weekend but he trained fully today.”
San Marino are the joint lowest ranked country in world football and hence England are expected to win the game easily. But the coach is not planning to rest key players as he wants to keep the momentum going.
“We’re not planning on wholesale changes,” he said.
“We are keen to keep the momentum going. I think the players who played against Norway and against Switzerland did a good job and deserve a further confidence.
“But on the other hand there are a lot of players who are knocking on the door and would like to get into the team and I’ve got to weigh the two things very carefully.
“Keeping the team together but maybe also using at least one of these two games as a chance to see somebody else play.”
Hodgson was accompanied to the press conference by his skipper Wayne Rooney.
When quizzed about his former teammate at Manchester United, Danny Welbeck, Rooney was insistent that the Arsenal forward deserves more credit. Welbeck has scored 4 goals for Arsenal, which includes a Champions League hat-trick against Galatasaray, since he signed for the club for A?16 million. The striker also scored both the goals in Englandai??i??s opening 2-0 win against Switzerland last month.
“He’s a fantastic footballer, I think sometimes he doesn’t get enough praise for his footballing ability,” Rooney said of Welbeck.
“The more he plays for Arsenal, he’ll prove what a good footballer he is, and for England. For me, he’s a top, top player.”
Roy Hodgson also spoke about Welbeck and how happy he was now that after the strikerai??i??s move to Arsenal, he will get more first-team opportunities which will also benefit the England squad.
“I’m pleased for him,” says Hodgson. ai???He’s been in my plans throughout the two years; he was with us in 2012.
“He’s someone I follow very, very closely. He hasn’t got an enormous amount of game time, and he’s had to spend a lot of time waiting for his chance.
“Now it’s great he’s got his move and to be one of the first names on the team sheet.”var
