Egyptian international Ahmed Fathi joins Arsenal FC for preseason training as Arsene Wenger looks to bolster defensive options.
Former Hull City and Sheffield United defender Ahmed Fathi has joined Arsenal on trial and his agent has confirmed that the Egyptian international has turned down big offers for a chance to play at the Emirates.
Ahmed Fathi is currently a free agent after his contract with Al Ahly expired last month. Fathi, who has had previous experiences of playing in England with Sheffield United and Hull City, has over 100 caps for Egypt since making his debut at the age of 17.
Fathi is primarily a right back, but can also play as a right winger or as a defensive midfielder. Although Arsenalai??i??s interest in him is questionable considering he is 29-year-old, but the Egyptian can be a versatile option to have in squad considering the Gunners are in need of a right back.
Mathieu Debuchy is expected to arrive at the Emirates this summer as a replacement for Bacary Sagna, who joined Manchester City, but Arsenal might need another right back in the squad with the future of Carl Jenkinson in doubts at the Emirates. Fathi could be a good back-up option for Debuchy with his experience in international football.
Craig Honeyman, representative of Ahmed Fathi, has revealed that the defender has turned down lucrative offers from elsewhere to play in England, with Arsenal.
“Ahmed is wanting to play in England, and he has turned down some very big offers to both stay in Egypt and also on the continent.
