With a change in system at Manchester United under new manager Louis Van Gaal a lot of players will feel this is the time to make their mark, none more so than 20 year old Tyler Blackett.
Whenever there is a new man at the helm, in any walk of life, in any profession, those under him generally feel that they have to start again, to prove to their boss that they deserve to be in his plans and can be counted upon at all times. This period can be quite unsettling for some of the old timers who could think that there is nothing for them to prove, but in the back of their minds they slowly realize that to make the cut they must deliver.
But this kind of a change also offers an opportunity to two other groups. The first group is made up of the youngsters & the newcomers who finally have a chance to showcase their potential. On the other hand, the second group consists of those in the background who just needed a change in scene to force their way back into the collective consciousness of the people in charge.
At Old Trafford a similar kind of change is now in motion with the appointment of Louis van Gaal this summer. Players like Ashley Young & Darren Fletcher who fall in the second group are already playing better than they have played for quite some time. Whereas some of the youngsters like Jesse Lingard, Reece James & Tyler Blackett who fall into the first group have played important roles in the pre season. These players must be hoping that this is the season when they would finally get to live their dream and establish themselves at Manchester United.
For Blackett the appointment of Louis Van Gaal could not have been better timed. This Manchester born 20 year old is primarily a centre half but was used as a left wing half by reserve team manager Warren Joyce last season. In short he is the perfect type of Van Gaal player, someone who can play on the left side of the back three or as a wing half on the same side.
Standing six feet tall and possessing a body which looks quite capable of bulking up a little bit more Blackett has all the physical attributes required of a centre back in the Premier League. He is also playing under a manager who is known for giving youth a chance at the very highest level.
His position at Old Trafford has been further elevated with the departures of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic & Patrice Evra this summer and the failure of United to land any replacements for the trio bar Luke Shaw. And with the latter out for a month with a hamstring injury and the arrival of Marcos Rojo getting delayed because of legal issues now is the time for Blackett to stake his claim for a permanent starting spot under Van Gaal.
The situation surrounding Blackett was quite different at the start of the summer though with many around Carrington predicting that the youngster would be one of the first to be allowed to leave. This talk was a result of his indifferent showings while on loan at Championship sides Blackpool & Birmingham City last season. He started just five games for the Seasiders and his spell in the Midlands was even more disappointing. The general feeling around the 20 year old was that he had the talent but not the temperament.
To his credit though Blackett had a very strong pre season, playing a part in all six of Unitedai??i??s matches and proving that he can fit into the 3-4-1-2. Even against Swansea this weekend, in a match which highlighted the need for Van Gaal to enter into the transfer market, the performance of Blackett must have been reassuring. He completed 93% of his 90 passes and he looked quite assured on the ball even though his lack of tackling does raise a few questions.
Blackettai??i??s performance in Unitedai??i??s Premier League opener justifies the faith that Van Gaal has in him. The Dutchman firmly believes that Blackett has all the tools to succeed at the highest level but his only doubt is whether he can do it match-in & match-out.
Blackett also knows that he has the backing of the Old Trafford faithful who will no doubt be a little concerned due to a lack of transfer activity but will never turn their back on a lad who is Manchester United through and through.
