Cameroon officials are set to investigate reports alleging that seven of the nation’s players were involved in match-fixing at the World Cup.
The country’s football federation’s-Ai??FECAFOOT- has instructed its ethics committee to investigate claims of ai???fraudai??i?? in their group games, with special emphasis on the country’s 4-0 embarrassing defeat to Croatia in mind.
Cameroon looked like half a side they are in their group games and didn’t manage to register a single win. Instances of players taking on their own teammates made their show even more embarrassing.
Alex Song was sent off against Croatia after elbowing Croatia’s Mario Mandzukic.Ai??The allegations against Cameroon have stemmed from the fact that a convicted match-fixer- Wilson Raj Perumal- accurately predicted the Croatia result and the fact that a Cameroonian would be sent-off, during a discussion with German magazine Der Spiegel.
A statement from FECAFOOT read: “Recent allegations of fraud around Cameroon’s three 2014 World Cup games, especially Cameroon v Croatia, as well the existence of ai???seven bad apples (in our national team)ai??i?? do not reflect the values and principles promoted by our administration.
Ai??”We wish to inform the general public that, though not yet contacted by FIFA in regards to this affair, our administration has already instructed its Ethics Committee to further investigate these accusations.
Ai??”We are strongly committed to employ all means necessary to resolve this disruptive matter with the shortest delay.”
FIFA have not commented on whether they were looking into the issue personally, but insisted that as world football’s governing body, it did not want to “compromise any possible investigations”.
It add: “Speaking generally, the integrity of the game is a top priority for Fifa and as such we take any allegations of match manipulation very seriously.”
The Croatia- Cameroon match saw the African nation in the worst possible shape. It even sawAi??BenoAi??t Assou-Ekotto clashing with teammateAi??Benjamin Moukandjo and attempting to headbutt the latter.
Ai??Cameroon head coach Volker Finke was naturally angry after his side’s thrashing andAi??told French newspaper L’EquipeAi??Ai??after the match, “Some players behaved very badly, and that’s why we have conceded four goals.Ai??I know that it is difficult to play with 10 men, but that is not a reason to lose it to this point.Ai??The game was balanced until the red card. The Croatians were more clinical in front of goal, but Cameroon also had chances to score.Ai??The behaviour of some of the players is really not satisfactory. Even when we were 11-a-side, it was not acceptable.”
The World Cup has brought African nation a lot of infamy, so to speak. This onlyAi??adds to a long list of controversies for African teams at this World Cup. Both Ghana and Nigeria, who are now out of the tournament, were involved in disputes over money. Ghana also had two players sent home- Sulley Muntari for hitting an official and Kevin-Prince Boateng for allegedly swearing at the coach.
