Life just got a whole lot harder for Borussia Dortmund as Jakub Blaczszykowski was ruled out for the rest of the season. Some winter additions seem to be the only way to ensure European football next season.
Replacing Robert Lewandowski in the summer is indeed a priority for Borussia Dortmund but it doesnai??i??t really top the list at the minute. The recent injury to Jakub Blaczszykowski has lengthened Dortmundai??i??s injury list and limited JA?rgen Kloppai??i??s attacking resources for the remainder of the season.
The barrage of injuries and Dortmundai??i??s three front campaign have made life very difficult for Jurgen Klopp and his boys. The effects of playing week in and week out have taken a heavy toll not just on the casualties but also on those who have managed to stay fit for majority of the season – a prime example being Marco Reus. The former German Footballer of the Year has looked jaded over the past couple of months, failing to emulate the brilliance that fans always associate with him.
Another possible reason for Reusai??i?? lackluster showings of late could possibly be the inability of the two new signings, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, to fit into the Dortmund system. Both players, as talented as they may be, have failed to replicate the form that they showcased at their former clubs. With the duo unable to provide at the same level as former Dortmund attackers have, the onus has fallen almost completely on Reus and Lewandowski.
Whilst the Polish striker may still be able to perform at the top level, Reus has struggled to do so. Rotating Reus hasnai??i??t been an option for Klopp given the inefficiency of his other choices, the injury plague and the high standards that the club has set over the past few seasons. The latest outing against FC Augsburg was a clear indication of Reusai??i?? mental and physical exhaustion, despite just coming out of the winter break.
For two people to execute such a demanding attacking plan every single week is an unrealistic ask. With Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang not really looking at home even after an entire half of the season, continuing this way could well see die Schwarzgelben slip out of the Champions League spots in the next few weeks ai??i?? A position the club surely doesnai??i??t want to be in.
With Reus, and possibly Lewandowski, needing a rest it is fairly clear that at least one new face needs to be brought in before the transfer window closes. Sporting Director Michael Zorc earlier said that the club will not be delving into the market this winter but the injury to Kuba surely changes the complexion of the situation.
A return for Shinji Kagawa?
The first name that comes to every Dortmund fans mind is Shinji Kagawa. The Japanese international was adored at the Signal Iduna Park before he made the switch to Manchester United. He is no stranger to Kloppai??i??s system either, thereby eliminating the difficulties that the likes of Mkhitaryan, Aubameyang and Julian Schieber have faced. Also, Kagawa hasnai??i??t enjoyed the greatest of times at Old Trafford.
The diminutive midfielder has only managed 37 starts since joining United back in the summer of 2012. David Moyes and Manchester Unitedai??i??s willingness to allow Kagawa to leave is questionable but a half decent bid from Dortmund could well see the 24-year-old return to the Signal Iduna Park.
But the big question on a lot of peopleai??i??s minds will be whether he can continue where he left off at Dortmund. The nine average months at United may have set Kagawa back a fair deal, which was the case with Nuri Sahin when he returned from Real Madrid. The probability of getting the Kagawa of 2011 is low but there is absolutely no doubt that the Japanese star will surely be a boost, both tactically and in terms of morale, for Dortmund. The biggest question mark against his return is that of Dortmundai??i??s willingness to pay Unitedai??i??s valuation of him.
Kevin Volland, and other alternatives
Another name that has popped up when Dortmund and transfers have been mentioned in the same breath is Kevin Volland. The Hoffenheim attacker has not only headed one of Germanyai??i??s most free scoring attacking units but also been a regular feature in the German under-21 side over the past year. Volland is hugely versatile, having already played on both wings, as a supporting striker and as a center forward.
The 21-year-old, much like Kagawa, has age on his side. The huge advantage that Volland has over Kagawa is the relatively lower wage that he will demand given his credentials thus far. Another plus point in Vollandai??i??s favor is his ability to fit in almost anywhere in the attacking third, thereby making him a great utility player for the time being. With Hoffenheim destined to lose Volland in the near future, they could cash in on Dortmundai??i??s desperation and better their already wealthy account.
A host of other names have been brought up as potential Dortmund targets but whether clubs will be willing to let go of players half way through the season is a big doubt. Adrian Ramos at Hertha Berlin has been integral to their push for European football and interest from high paying Premier League sides might make Dortmund as a less likely future club for the Colombian. The likes of Diego Costa, Jackson Martinez and Edin Dzeko are the cream of the crop. But acquiring them, and meeting their wage demands will surely take a massive toll on Dortmundai??i??s finances.
How Dortmund decide to go about the last week of the transfer window is uncertain. But the one thing is certain – they need for a few fresh faces in attack. Whether it be the return of Shinji Kagawa, the arrival of the highly touted Kevin Volland, or a big money deal for a global star, Dortmund need to bring in someone. Kloppai??i??s limited resources are from satisfactory if the club wants to move forward in Europe and keep second spot domestically. The burning out of the likes of Reus and Sahin is inevitable if Zorc refuses to budge from his current position. Spending this winter is Dortmundai??i??s ticket to Champions League football next season.
