Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that he feels proud of developing promising English youngsters like Jack Wilshere, Kieran Gibbs, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Danny Welbeck and Calum Chambers.
Wenger has long been accused of relying too much on French imports but Arsene Wenger said that there is no truth in such claims and he is always eager to develop young English players. Arsenal currently have some exciting young English players like Jack Wilshere, Kieran Gibbs, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Danny Welbeck and Calum Chambers in their squad and Wenger said that he feels very proud of developing these players.
“I am very proud because for long years I have been accused of not developing English players,” said Wenger in a press conference. “We gave chances to players from our academy and I try to buy the best English players. Why do they come here? They know if they are good they get a chance. I support France and England. It is simple. We want, if possible, to make the core of the team more local.”
Arsene Wenger said that he follows the examples of the likes of Manchester United, FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich while developing a team and English players make his job easier as there is no language barrier. “We do some work to develop them so that these players are together for long time at Arsenal,” Wenger said. “I’m a big fan of developing the mental work, the love for the club, with our youth team and senior players because the modern life has gone more individual.
“Players now individually plan their careers. We teach them the values very early. I believe the future of our modern sport has to turn the game more in favour of the clubs. It’s easier for them [if they are English]. When you buy a player from Barcelona at some stage he might want to go back. A guy who is English, who is from London, and plays for Arsenal, why should he go?”
Arsene Wenger also said that midfielder Jack Wilshere is now back to his best but raised doubts over the proper use of the midfielder by England manager Roy Hodgson.
“He is back physically to where he was before,” said Wenger. “He is not a ball-winner. I believe he is more a guy who you want to get close to the final third. To keep him deep, you take a big part of his efficiency away. He is a guy who likes to penetrate when there are many people. He can provoke free-kicks, he can create openings. It would be detrimental to his strengths and a position that is not his strength.”
