Arsenal FC have reportedly stepped up their interest in Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira, who has turned down a new contract from the Spanish club.
Sami Khediraai??i??s future at Real Madrid has been up for speculations recently with Toni Kroosai??i?? expected arrival at Santiago Bernabeu. Reports suggest that Arsenal are lining up a big money move for the German international as Khedira turns down an offer for a contract extension.
The 27-year-old joined Real Madrid in 2010 after some eye catching performances for Stuttgart in the Bundesliga. Khedira has since then been a regular in the first team line-up of both Real Madrid and Germany. The dynamic midfielder has won one La Liga title and two Copa del Rey during his stint in Spain so far and was also a part of the side which lifted the Champions League last season. But Khediraai??i??s contribution in that triumph was limited as his season was cut short by due to a terrible knee injury.
The former Stuttgart star did regain his fitness ahead of the World Cup and has produced some good performances in Brazil so far as Germany booked their place in the final of the tournament with a convincing win over the host nation.
But his immediate future at Real Madrid has come under constant speculations this summer. Khediraai??i??s current contract will expire in 2015 and Real Madrid has failed to reach an agreement with the German international for an extension. El Confidencial reports Real Madrid has offered him a two-year extension, but Khedira is unwilling to commit before considering other options.
Los Blancos are expected to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos after the World Cup and this is likely to relegate Khedira to the bench next season. Real Madrid are reportedly willing to sell him if the right offer comes in and a host of clubs are monitoring his situation at the moment.
Manchester United and Chelsea have been linked with a move for the German midfielder, but reports in English media suggest that Arsenal are currently the frontrunners in his pursuit. The Gunners are expected to spend heavily in this transfer market and have already sign Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona.
Arsene Wenger is believed to be keen on adding more muscle to the midfield and is eyeing a defensive midfielder to add to his squad. The Gunners are lining up a A?24million bid for Khedira and are willing to offer him a massive A?150,000 a week contract, which will make him the clubai??i??s top earner. Wenger is also hoping that the German core of his side will prove to be an added advantage in convincing him for this move.
The Gunners have also earmarked Lars Bender and Southampton defensive midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin as back-up targets if the move for Khedira fails to materialize.
