Arsenal FC manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed the unavailability of Olivier Giroud for the rest of the year after the Frenchman underwent an ankle surgery.
The French international striker suffered an ankle injury in the closing stages of Arsenalai??i??s match against Everton. Giroud came on as a substitute in that game and scored the important equalizer in the dying moments of the match with a powerful header, but that draw came at a price for Arsenal as the 27-year-old picked up an injury.
Initial diagnosis didnai??i??t show any major cause for concern, but later it was revealed that the Frenchmanai??i??s injury is serious and he was forced to undergo an ankle surgery. Giroud could possibly be out for four months and is unlikely to play this year. Arsene Wenger has confirmed this news after Arsenalai??i??s 1-0 win over Besiktas last night.

Giroudai??i??s injury has left the Gunners terribly short of options upfront with Yaya Sanogo being the only out-and-out striker left in the squad. The youngster is highly inexperienced and also has questionable fitness record to rely upon for such a long period. Lukas Podolski and Joel Campbell are two other options, but none of them are proven goal scorers. New signing Alexis Sanchez, who was asked to lead the line of attack in absence of Giroud in the last two matches, could continue in that role as Arsene Wenger insisted that the Chilean international was signed to play upfront.
Sanchez did score the winner against Besiktas last night, but he has mostly played as a wide forward for Barcelona and as an inside forward for Chile, it will be interesting to see how well he adapts to the role of being the lone man upfront for the Gunners. Wenger insisted that Giroudai??i??s injury wouldnai??i??t force the club to buy a new striker as he believes that the squad already has enough players to fill in that role.
