AC Milan gets their campaign underway this weekend with the side on the road to recovery. We preview Rossoneri’s upcoming season.
AC Milan begins this season as the true underdog team of Serie A. Every year when the season starts, there is renewed hope, ambition and eagerness to fight for the top honors of world football. Not this time. This is truly the year zero for Milan in every sense of the term. Not only are they rebuilding a team from scratch, but also they are trying to attach some sense of pride in the red and black shirt ai??i?? a pride which was lost in the previous couple of years, a pride which was torn apart by internal feuds and turmoil.
Last year was possibly the lowest point for Milan in a decade. Not only did they fail to qualify for Europe, they also adopted a perform-or-fire policy for coaches. Never before such a hair trigger was seen at Milan. And coincidentally, it coincided with Barbara Berlusconiai??i??s emergence as a key player in the Milan boardroom. Uncle Festerai??i??s powers were reigned in for the first time in his career as he, at one point of time looked to move on. However, common sense prevailed and to everyoneai??i??s joy, Galliani decided to stay. The entire episode only highlighted the slow decline of Silvio and the rapid emergence of Barbara, who even a few years back was more famous for her affair with then-Milan striker, Pato.
The ugliest part was the handling of Seedorf. The rapid announcement, the swift move towards retirement and his arrival at Milan
Inzaghi brought in many fresh ideas and also a strong sense of discipline. If there is anyone who has embodied the Milan spirit, it is him. If there has been anyone who has worn his heart on his sleeve every single time he walked through the hallowed annals of San Siro, it is him. As a player, Inzaghiai??i??s status as a champion and a legend will never diminish. But then again, coaching is a totally different cup of tea. As Ancelotti, Guardiola et al will testify, not many goes on from having a successful football career to that on the bench. The most glaring failure is that of Seedorf and that is something Inzaghi will hope to avoid this season. Unlike Seedorf though, he has his people skills at the right place and it was only due to his appointment that Mauro Tassotti remained as assistant coach.
With the entire club in turmoil, it has not been an easy ride for the players. Even though they are the ones who executed their managerai??i??s plans on the field, they have been the first ones to receive abuse from the fans. Common scenes from last season were peppered with Kaka and Dida pleading with fans. With the departure of Kaka during this summerai??i??s transfer window, Milan now have lost every single member of their 2007 Champions League winning squad. The sole link to that memorable victory has now swapped his boots for a suit and will be hoping that in a few yearsai??i?? time Milan will once more reach that position atop Europe.
There has been a lot of movement in the transfer front with their transfer policy once more being ridiculed by fans worldwide. The only player that they have actually bought so far in this transfer window has been Adil Rami, who even paid out of his own pocket to be at Milan. Although that move was fast forwarded by Ramiai??i??s own feud with Valencia, it once more highlighted the fact that Milan are no longer able to attract the brightest and best talents around the world. The possible arrival of the 50-million reject from Chelsea, Fernando Torres only worsens the prevailing notion. Milan have also promoted Hachim Mastour from the youth system straight into the first team. He is one of the best talents ever to have stepped in Milanello and it will serve Milan best if they handle him with the utmost care.
Other notable arrivals at Milan this season have been Michael Agazzi from Chievo Verona (free transfer), Alex from PSG (free transfer), Jeremy Menez from PSG (free transfer), Diego Lopez from Real Madrid (free transfer) and Pablo Armero from Udinese (loan). While the capture of Agazzi at the start of the transfer window was seen as a cover for Abbiati, the capture of Lopez changed all that. This is the same Diego Lopez which kept out Saint Iker from the starting line-up at Real Madrid, the same keeper which led them to their decima. The fact that Milan got him for free did raise a few eyebrows. First it was Kaka who arrived on free and then Lopez. Granted, Kaka did not feature for Real that regularly, but Lopez had implanted himself as the number one choice at Madrid. Whether this is a move to give Casillas move playing time (considering his sojourn for the national team is pretty close to an end) or to one more help out Milan, only time will tell. But for the time being, Lopez will be the default choice at the back for Milan.
Notable departures this transfer window have been Bakaye Traore to Bursaspor, Kaka to Orlando City, Urby Emanuelson to Roma, Kingsley Boateng to NAC Breda, Kevin Constant to Trabzonspor and Mario Balotelli to Liverpool. Traore was always a mystery at Milan and his departure never even bothered anyone. However, the transfers of Emanuelson, Constant and more importantly, Balotelli showed that Milan were ready to part with their deadwood. Balotelliai??i??s move was sealed during the World Cup itself when Berlusconi Sr slipped it to the media but later it was portrayed more as a move by Inzaghi than him. The fact that Balotelliai??i??s performance has fallen way down from his standards was another reason why Milan decided to cash him in. However, that did raise the question that why was he brought in the first place when players like Tevez, Llorente were available for the same price?
Coming to the pre-season matches, Milan started off well against some of the lowest tier teams of Italy, Renate and Monza. Victories
Once more the focus is on the players to execute Inzaghiai??i??s vision on the field and every single one of them is surely feeling the heat. However, for one player, this season presents the best opportunity to showcase Milan what they were missing last season. El Shaarawy had exploded on the first team scene a couple of years back but injuries and pure bad luck thwarted his way to glory. Having spent almost the entire last season on the sidelines and missing the World Cup due to injury, this season presents the perfect opportunity for him to grab the headlines. He is a player capable of carrying the entire team on his shoulders and although that will not happen this season, the spotlight is for him to take. Another player who has been on the forefront in this Inzaghi reign is Cristante. He has featured in almost all of the matches so far and has played a key role at the heart of midfield. With Montolivo out till October, Cristante will feature heavily in the Milan line-up.
This is the first of many rebuilding years for Milan and with nothing other than Serie A and Coppa Italia to focus on, Inzaghi now has a team in the same position like that of Juventus and Roma few seasons back. Whether he leads Milan on the road to recovery or whether he fails miserably, the madness around Milan is about to reach fever pitch in a few daysai??i?? time as they welcome Lazio in the season opener.
