Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Villas-Boas has failed to deal with two character flaws that have wrecked his ambitions and chances of success every time.
Disgraced Spurs coach Andre Villas-Boas wasn’t always treated with the disdain reserved for lepers.
Once upon a time, everything he touched turned into gold. In the 2010-11 season that saw his wards at Porto steamroll the Primeira Liga opposition in an undefeated season, Villas-Boas showed the mark of true genius when he masterminded the UEFA Europa League and Portuguese Cup triumphs as well. One year in charge, and a treble under his belt.
There was always going to be bigger and better things for him to focus on. Villas-Boas did not disappoint. Grandiose visions of the future beckoning, Villas-Boas took up that most thankless of jobs – manager at Chelsea FC. The Portuguese tactician, surely, did not imagine he was going to pull off a Ferguson-esque reign at Stamford Bridge. He would’ve known it was going to be a short-term matter, given how bigger names had fallen by the wayside before him, but he certainly would have hoped it lasted for over a couple of years.
In the end, Villas-Boas’ termination from his post at Chelsea in March of 2012 was inevitable after months of miserable performances and strife within the team. And yet, for all the temptation to see this as a case of a meteoric rise followed by a dramatic fall, the truth is Villas-Boas never really stood a chance.
The Primeira Liga may offer itself as a fertile ground for talent spotting, but lacks considerably in the competitiveness that characterizes the Premier League, the Serie A, the La Liga and the Bundesliga. So as long as Porto could manage to get the better of Benfica twice in a season, challenging but not too impossible a task, going the entire season undefeated was always going to be a proposition.
The Premier League was a step too far for Villas-Boas. Starting the league campaign off with a scoreless draw, before flattering to deceive with a couple of narrow wins, Villas-Boas betrayed his one fatal flaw. His lack of experience as a player meant Villas-Boas is almost exclusively reliant on theory. An academic in a war zone; the kind of guy who gets shot between the eyes clutching a book of Sun Tzu’s “Art of War”.
That begins to explain why Villas-Boas persisted with a formation that simply made little sense. A high-line was suicidal, in the Premier League, any way you cut it. In a league, where defense wins you the title, deliberately playing your defenders out of position and far up the field was an invitation to opponents to tear the team to shreds. With its defenders ambling on the slower side, Chelsea soon fell victim to Manchester United and Arsenal by margins of 3-1 and 3-5.
The high-line sounds great in theory; the notion of pressing the ball in the opponent’s half and pressuring them into making mistakes is an honorable one. But it requires far too many variables to fall into place. It makes Catalan-like demands of your team’s passing ability, the ability of your defenders to scale back en masse, the levels of Zen-like concentration over 90 minutes, and a general inability of your opponents to respond in kind.
When it failed to set Chelsea alight in the league, Andre Villas-Boas resorted to that age-old tactic of bad workmen. Attributing it to a series of imagined and fatal flaws in battle-hardened stars Anelka, Alex and Lampard, Villas-Boas doubled-down on the high-line tactic in the face of overwhelming logic. In the end, his reign was cut short by an assertive Roman Abramovich intent on salvaging his team’s reputation.
Villas-Boas should have moved out of the Premier League, at that point, and moved to a lesser competitive league to rebuild some semblance of ability and confidence. Instead he doubled down, and signed up to coach Tottenham Hotspur in a bid to thumb his nose at Chelsea FC. With a reported guarantee sought by Daniel Levy, that he’d learned from his mistakes, Villas-Boas showed little hesitation in accepting his second chance in England.
At first, Villas-Boas reined in his worst impulses marrying an exposition of striking talent with expansive football. It worked because he had the players, Adebayor and Bale among them, to play out his newer restrained vision. The Spurs were phenomenal, going by their past records. They scored a club high of 72 points and only missed out on Champions League qualification thanks to a win by Arsenal over Newcastle United by a solitary goal. Once again, the Spurs were let down in heartbreaking fashion.
The new season started with Bale’s highly contested move away from White Hart Lane. With the money that came into the club’s coffers, transfer moves were made for Erik Lamela, Nacer Chadli, Vlad Chiriches and Christian Eriksen. What Villas-Boas had hoped for was talent along the likes of Hulk, Moutinho and David Villa.
The coach wanted to buy the stars he could play. Instead he was being asked to play the stars he could buy.
Inexplicably, or perhaps out of a desire to cover the team’s weaknesses, Villas-Boas reverted to the high-line strategy yet again this season. It proved to be disastrous in the outing against Manchester City, as a chastened Villas-Boas watched his team go down 6-0. For a while it looked like he’d learned his lesson well, as he settled for a traditional defensive line, in the drawn game against Manchester United.
When facing off against Liverpool and a menacing Suarez, Villas-Boas chose to sadly tempt fate again. Rather than stick with the formation that paid dividends against the Red Devils, the tactician tried one last desperate gamble. Playing a high line and going a man down, the Spurs imploded in shocking fashion in a 5-0 loss.
Villas-Boas may hold the honor of being the Spurs’ manager with the highest percentage of league wins. But that will be scant consolation when he reflects over the roots of his failure. An idealistic academic preference for the high line even in the absence of the necessary players, and a suicidal tendency to boldly gamble on his team’s fortunes when their backs are truly against the wall.
