Tottenham are in cruise control of this group currently and have five points advantage over second placed Anzhi. Spurs have won their opening three matches and will guarantee themselves a place in the next round if they win their match against Sheriff at White Hart Lane.
Both sides came into this game on decent domestic form, but Spurs were the favourites from the outset. The away side went off to a flying start as Jan Vertonghen provided them the lead in the 12th minute of the match. The big Belgium international was picked out by a wonderful cross from Christian Eriksen on the right and Vertonghen headed it home.
Sheriff responded well to that early goal and looked to provide a quick response. The home created some good opportunities to equalise, but failed to take them due to some good defending, along with some poor finishing. Vlad Chiriches also made a vital clearance off the line in that half. Tottenham suffered a blow at the back as full back Ezekiel Fryers had to be replaced by Michael Dawson due to an injury.
In the second half the game slowed down a bit and neither of sides created too many openings. Tottenham dominated possession, while Sheriff looked to hit them on the break. Then in the 75th minute of the game, Jermaine Defoe provided the second goal for Tottenham with an attempt from outside the box. The Englishmanai??i??s shot took a wicked deflection and left Vjeksolav Tomic stranded in goal.
It wasnai??i??t the perfect performance, but one that Spurs needed. Sheriff on the other hand would feel unlucky to have lost by that score line, they could have taken something out of that game with a bit of luck and better finishing.
Tottenham striker Jermiane Defoe also equalled Martin Chiversai??i?? club record of 22 European goal with that strike in the second half. Andre Villas Boas heaped praise on the England international on his amazing achievement.
“It is some achievement. If we continue like this, there is a big chance he will break the record.
“It will be another great achievement for him. I am sure he will achieve it.
“Let’s not celebrate it before it happens, but it will be a great record for him and the club. It was another great performance by Jermain.” ai??i?? The Tottenham manager said.
Villas Boas accepted that a draw would have been a fair result considering the number of opportunities Sheriff created on the counter attack.
“They had some great opportunities on the counter-attack.
“The game could have easily gone to 1-1 as after we scored they had so many chances to level the score.
“They looked good on the counter-attack, had some great moments and we have to recognise that.
“A draw would have been a fair result, but the second goal is always important in games like so this, so both teams were creating.
“We were fortunate to get the second goal to kill the game, but it could have gone the other way.
“In general, we did enough to win the game and get to nine points, which was the objective so we can achieve qualification at the next game,” ai??i?? Villas Boas added.
