Roy Keane – Manchester United’s Captain Fantastic (THT Heroes)

If there was a football dream team being selected and one had to pick a Captain, a leader of men, who could rouse his teammates in the hour of need, and give his all to the cause, there would be very few who could challenge Roy Keane for the spot.

Sir Alex Ferguson was manager of Manchester United for 27 years. During this time, he guided the club from a period of mediocrity to the exalted status of the most successful team in England. It is therefore no mean feat when you are talked of as the greatest signing ever by a manager known for staggering success. Roy Keane is that man. Captain of the Manchester United side from 1997 to 2005, Keane was signed by Sir Alex from Nottingham Forest in 1993. In his 12 years at the club, Keane won 7 Premier League titles, 4 FA Cups along with a Champions League trophy. This array of silverware is befitting of a man for whom the will to win is second to none. Keaneai??i??s determination, hunger and desire for victory were a few of the attributes that made Ferguson splash out the then record transfer fee of A?3.75 million for the Irishman.

But, not many know that it was a twist of fate that landed Roy Keane at Manchester United rather than their Lancashire rivals Blackburn Rovers. Then Blackburn manager Kenny Dalglish had spoken to Keane about a transfer to Rovers, but when the contract was being agreed upon, Blackburn realized they didnai??i??t have the correct paperwork in order to complete the transfer. Since this was on a Friday afternoon, Keane and Dalglish agreed a verbal contract and agreed to meet on Monday to officially complete the deal. Meanwhile, Ferguson, on learning about the proposed transfer called Keane and asked him if he would like to join Manchester United instead. He met up with Keane on Saturday with the correct paperwork and the rest is most definitely history.

The Performer

Keane hurdles a challenge during the early years

Keane was seen as a replacement for the ageing Bryan Robson and Fergusonai??i??s astute judgement was rewarded. Perhaps the first moment when Keane endeared himself to the United fans was in the Manchester derby in 1993 at Cityai??i??s Maine Road when Keane scored the winner in a 3-2 victory. This was a match in which City had taken a 2-0 lead and Unitedai??i??s comeback was capped off by a brilliant performance from Keane. Charging forward, making passes, interceptions and taking shots, Keane was inspired in the second half.Ai??United went on to retain the Premier League and Keane got his first taste of league success. Keane also won his first FA the same year.

As the fans rejoiced a super first season in a United shirt for Keane, they were soon to witness his dark side as Keane collected a grand total of 11 red cards at Manchester United and his first was as cynical as they come. In the 1995 FA Cup semifinal replay against Crystal Palace, Keane stamped on Gareth Southgate after the latter had tried to tackle him. Keane was sent off for that and Southgate has since found the funny side to it. However, Keane did see the red mist on many occasions and that left Ferguson ruing the fact that he had to contend with Keaneai??i??s absence in midfield. Keaneai??i??s importance in midfield was more pronounced in the following years as established midfielders like Paul Ince and Bryan Robson left the club and Fergieai??i??s Fledglings were blooded into the club. With the likes of Paul Scholes, David Beckham and Nicky Butt introduced to the first team, Keane was left as one of the most experienced players in the dressing room. He was very often an inspiration for the youngsters due to his strong work ethic, discipline and determination. It was no surprise then that when captain Eric Cantona hung up his boots in 1997, Keane was the automatic choice to lead the team out. It was a job Keane performed with relish.

TheAi??HA?land Controversy

His first season as United captain coincided with an incident that would be the trigger for one of his most cynically aggressive moments as a player. In the Premier League game against Leeds United, Keane got injured from a seemingly innocuous clash with Alf-Inge HA?land. Although Keane had seriously hurt himself,Ai??HA?land thought he was faking it and in turn accused Keane of trying to hurt him. Keane missed the rest of the 1997-98 season due to this injury (United lost the title to Arsenal even after leading them by 11 points) and he never forgot the taunt he had received from HA?land. Four years on, HA?land was playing for Manchester City and Keane still had a bit of revenge on mind in the 2001 Manchester derby. As the game was in the bag, five minutes from time, Keane lunged in studs up on HA?landai??i??s knee and was immediately sent off for the foul. A year later, in his autobiography, Keane claimed that he intended to hurt HA?land.

Said Keane ai??i?? ai???I’d waited long enough. I fu**ing hit him hard. The ball was there (I think). Take that you c*nt. And don’t ever stand over me sneering about fake injuries.ai???

The Leader

His teammates and his manager lived with his indiscipline because of his immense drive during games. A famous example of this was in the Champions League semi final second leg against Juventus at the Stadio delle Alpi the following season. Juventus had held United to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in the first leg and were expected to breeze through the second leg at home in Turin. Indeed, Filippo Inzaghi had given Juventus a 2-0 second leg lead by the 11th minute.

However, Keane had other ideas. He tirelessly ran around the pitch, dictating play, intercepting passes and making crucial tackles. Keane scored the first goal from a Beckham corner that paved the way for a comeback. In the first half, Keane was booked for a challenge on Zidane. Keane remonstrated and knew that he would now be forced to miss the Champions League Final even if United went on. This did not diminish his determination to book a place for United in the final. In fact, it made him more determined to win the match. He picked himself up and changed gears to perform at an intensity that was a rare sight. He marked Zidane out of the game and made sure United turned out 3-2 winners away from home. Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to his performance.

“It was the most emphatic display of selflessness I have seen on a football field. Pounding over every blade of grass, competing if he would rather die of exhaustion than lose, he inspired all around him. I felt it was an honour to be associated with such a player” said Ferguson.

United went on to win the Champions League final against Bayern Munich and although Keane didnai??i??t play in the final, he was called out to lift the trophy, his teammates realizing the important role he had played for United in the campaign. The Juventus match was a big game and the captain stood up when it mattered. It was as if he simply refused to accept defeat. His sacrifice for the team drove his teammates on and United performed on the night at such a high level that the Turin crowd were taken aback. Very rarely had they seen their great Juventus side being overshadowed on their own turf before. It was a performance to be proud of for a Manchester United supporter.

Keane has been the perfect captain for his teammates. He is someone they looked up to during games for leadership. Keane would berate his own teammates for not covering ground to defend or for not being committed enough to a challenge. He expected the best from all Manchester United players and considered each of them worthy of wearing the shirt. He would defend them to his last as well. In the famous tunnel row ahead of the game against Arsenal at Highbury in the 2004-05 season, Gunners skipper Patrick Vieira was having a go at Gary Neville and Keane intervened taking matters into his own hands. It is this sort of defence of his own teammates that brought out a lot of respect and admiration from them. United blew away Arsenal in that match turning out 4-2 winners.

Beginning of the End

As the seasons rolled on, wear and tear started to take its toll on Keaneai??i??s combative and explosive style of play. He was injured often and was missed during many stretches of the season. Unitedai??i??s game suffered and it was a period where Arsenal dominated the Premiership. In his last interview as a Manchester United player, Keane vented out a lot of anger directed at his teammates, who in his absence were not performing up to a level he expected out of Manchester United players. It came on the back of a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Middlesbrough in November 2005. In this interview to MUTV, his rant was directed at players who had lost sight of themselves and who didnai??i??t want to work hard enough to earn victories for the club. Players like John Oai??i??Shea, Darren Fletcher and Alan Smith were targeted. Keane even slammed Rio Ferdinand saying ai???Just because you are paid A?120,000-a-week and play well for 20 minutes against Tottenham, you think you are a superstar.ai??? Although the rant was deemed too explosive to be broadcast, it had the desired effect. United beat in-form Chelsea in the Premier League thanks to a Darren Fletcher header and a more competitive United performance. The players seemed to have turned up for the big game, even without their talismanic skipper.

However, frictions were developing between Keane and Ferguson and it was decided that the player and club should part ways. Keane left Manchester United in 2005, after 12 years of fantastic service. United have never since had such an influential midfielder and captain. He was a battle hardened soldier, who for 90 minutes on the pitch gave everything. He expected nothing less from his teammates and even now, players like Darren Fletcher who were influenced by their captain speak highly of his methods. They attribute the recent successes of Manchester United to the spirit Keane infused into the Red Devils dressing room.

Fletcher said in 2009: ai???He [Keane] was our captain, he was our leader and he left a mark: where we are now is down to him, our dedication comes from the standards he set. The rules about time-keeping, about getting in a half-hour early, they were his instructions back in the day and those traditions continue.ai???

Roy Keane was a loyal servant to Manchester United. He lived, breathed and cared for the club whose shirt he wore week in week out. There was a glint in his eye when he pulled on the captainai??i??s armband. He was a fighter on the pitch who would never say die and would go on to inspire the same from his teammates in the years to come.

480 Appearances. 51 Goals. 7 Premier Leagues. 1 Champions League. One Roy Keane.
