TheHardTackle looks at the playing style of Chelsea midfielder Ramires and analyses how Mourinho has been using his skills in a defensive capacity this season.
Signed from Benfica in 2010, Ramires was a fairly unknown quantity to Chelsea fans. Being a Brazilian, it was inevitable he would bring a certain flair and pace to the game. When they saw him in action for the first time against Stoke in the Premier League, little did they know that a man with such a small build would go on to become one of the finest midfielders Chelsea have signed recently. Bringing a new dimension to Chelsea’s play with his vision, he prides himself on his ability to cover for the defense and join the attack, when required.
Playing style:
Most coaches would describe Ramires as a pacy right-midfielder with lots of stamina, determination and an ability to win the ball. He is your typical box-to-box midfielder and can play anywhere in the middle. He has the ability to score goals with his fantastic dribbling ability and is often seen in the box helping out the strikers.
His playing style has changed under Mourinho this season with him being held back a lot more to perform the ‘Makelele role’ for Chelsea. Granted he has a lot more attacking instinct than the latter, but his tackling ability and his reading of the game can be compared to Makelele at a similar stage in his career (more..). He serves as part of Mourinho’s 4-2-3-1 formation with Lampard (or Mikel), with him usually sitting in front of the back four. Given Ramires’ penchant for grappling for the ball and his excellent distribution abilities, this position seems tailor-made for him. Most of Chelsea’s attacks start from the back with either Lampard or Ramires providing the ball to the wingers or full backs, hence starting the move.
Comparing his position from last season to now, it becomes clear that he has been indeed holding back this season. His touches this season so far seem restricted to the center circle as compared to his touches last season where they were more spread out:
Further dissecting his role this season, his play is typically limited to the center-circle, with him or Lampard (or Mikel) staying back when either one of them goes to attack. Following heat map demonstrates the same:
His stats this season also back his role. His pass accuracy is an impressive 90% as compared to the equally impressive 85% from last season and the average duels won stand at 46% (almost 1 in every 2 duels). This season, 30% of passes are forward passes while the rest are sideways, as compared to the previous season where he attacked more resulting in 32% forward passes. The average number of tackles he puts in has gone to an average of 4 per game as compared to 2 last season further strengthening his credentials for the current position.
The other side of the coin:
As always, there are differing opinions as to which his best position is. Many believe his attacking ability is being curtailed by the position he is playing in currently. A look at the stats, attacking wise, reveal that his goals have dried up, the average shot accuracy has gone down and his defence-splitting runs are being missed by many Chelsea fans. Ramires was among the leading assist provided for Chelsea last season. His incisive runs into the box creating space for attackers and precise passes have not been seen much of this season
Having said that, given the current plethora of options that Chelsea have in the attacking midfield sense, Ramires would struggle to find a consistent spot in the team. His current role gives him the freedom to even attack if he wants knowing that Frank Lampard will cover for him. Also, with Mourinho’s style of play and having two defensive midfielders in the team also gives the full backs more freedom to go up and attack down the flanks. Ramires’ presence allows for that.
His comparison to Makelele would seem unfair to many, given the latter’s almost non-existent presence in attack. However, ability wise, Ramires’ interceptions, his fearlessness of going into tackles and his untiring nature reminds us, in some way, of the way Makelele used to play for Chelsea. Although this is his first season as a defensive midfielder and there is still time left for him to prove himself, Ramires himself would not mind the comparison to the Chelsea and Real Madrid legend.
Ramires is the typical box-to-box midfielder every manager would love to have him in their teams.The 26-year old Brazilian has certainly made his mark on Chelsea fans. His robust style of play, his grit and determination suit the Premier League perfectly. It is his very un-Brazilian qualities that make him adapt so well into the league. He may not demand the headlines as the Hazards or Matas of this world, but he is equally effective in the star-studded Chelsea midfield.
