Premiership Forecast : Two Derbies Make For An Exciting Weekend

With two big derbies on the cards, this promises to be an exciting weekend as Liverpool face Manchester United and Arsenal host Tottenham Hotspur. We take a look at what to expect from all these games.

Manchester City v Hull City

The weekend starts with an early kick-off between one of the title contenders and one of the relegation contenders, although both Manchester City and Hull City are coming into this game on the back of contrasting results.

After making an impressive start to their campaign with a convincing 4-0 victory over Newcastle United, Manuel Pellegrini faced his first defeat in the Premier League as newly promoted side Cardiff City put on a fantastic display. Pellegriniai??i??s concern was Cityai??i??s make shift defence which featured Javi Garcia at the back, in place of injured Vincent Kompany and Matija Nastasic. But Nastasic is expected to return in this game against Hull and will feature alongside Lescott. Kompany and Jovetic remains at the sidelines, while there are doubts about the fitness of Micah Richards.

Hull City on the other hand recovered from the loss they suffered at the hands of Chelsea on the opening day with fantastic 1-0 victory over Norwich. Steve Bruce will be particularly pleased with his sides ability to defend a one goal lead with 10 men as Yannick Sagbo was sent off early on in the game. New signing Danny Graham is expected to start in the match against City in place of the suspended Sagbo. Stephen Quinn and Abdoulaye Faye remain at the side lines with injuries.

Prediction : Manchester City 2-0 Hull City

Expect City to bounce back from the defeat last week with an impressive performance at home. The return of Nastasic will help in plugging the holes in the defence.

Sergio Aguero (Manchester City), Robert Koren (Hull City)

Last Result : Hull City 2-1 Manchester City [2010]

Newcastle United v Fulham

Yohan Cabaye – Transfer uncertainty mould mean missing the match

Newcastle United have had a poor start to this seasonai??i??s campaign and nearly everything has gone wrong for them, both on and off the pitch. They were thrashed in the opening match against Manchester City and then managed only a draw at home against West Ham. One of their most key players, Yohan Cabaye, is subject of interest from Arsenal and has reportedly refused to play for the club. To add to all his, Alan Pardew faces a huge injury list ahead of their next fixture.

Ryan Taylor and Michael Williamson are out injured and arenai??i??t expected to return anytime sooner. Jonas Gutierrez, Loic Remy, Massadio Haidara and Cheick Tiote also have fitness concerns and are expected to miss this game. Yohan Cabaye, who was left out of the League Cup squad for the midweek match, might feature on the bench but is unlikely to start as his future remains under speculations. Steven Taylor, who was dismissed in the opening game, will continue to serve his suspension.

Fulham got a crucial result away from home at Sunderland in their opening game, but crumbled to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Arsenal at Craven Cottage last weekend. Martin Jol is still without his two new signings Fernando Amorebieta and Maarten Stekelenburg, while Kieran Richardson remains on the side line as well.

Bryan Ruiz is in contention for start in this match after being limited to a role on the bench in the opening two matches. He will replace Kasami. It will also be interesting to see if Darren Bent, who opened his account against Arsenal, gets to start upfront alongside Berbatov.

Prediction : Newcastle United 1-1 Fulham

None of the teams are eye-catching form at the moment. This wonai??i??t be one of the most exciting games of this weekend, although we expect both the teams to score. A draw it is.

Players To Watch Out For ai??i??

Ben Arfa (Newcastle City), Bryan Ruiz (Fulham)

Last Result : Newcastle United 1-0 Fulham [April, 2013]

Norwich City v Southampton

Chris Hughton would have been extremely frustrated with his teamai??i??s performance at Hull City last weekend. After conceding an early goal Norwich failed to score past them, even though Hull played most of the match with 10-men.

Gary Hooper and Elliott Bennett remains on the side-lines with injuries, but Anthony Pilkington is available once again after missing last game with an injury. Hughton will also welcome back Sebastian Bassong to the starting line-up who missed the start of the season due to fitness concerns. Norwich are expected to play in a more attacking formation at home against Southampton and Wes Hoolahan is expected to start in behind Wolfswinkel.

Southampton have made a fine start to the season with a victory against West Brom, followed by a draw with Sunderland. There are concerns about the fitness of Luke Shaw and Morgan Schneiderlin after being substituted at halftime last weekend. They missed the cup games in midweek, but are expected to start against Norwich.

Prediction : Norwich City 1-2 Southampton

Southampton are likely to maintain their good start with a victory against Norwich, but it will be a close game.

Players To Watch Out For ai??i??

Ricky van Wolfswinkel (Norwich), Adam Lallana (Southampton)

Last Result : Norwich City 0-0 Southampton

Cardiff City v Everton

Craig Bellamy – Will he help Cardiff City open up Everton’s defence?

Cardiff City stunned everyone with their fantastic victory over Manchester City last weekend. Fraizer Campbell scored a wonderful brace as Cardiff came from behind to snatch a memorable victory. The newly promoted side have invested heavily in their squad this summer and look to be in good stead to avoid relegation this season.

Andreas Cornelius is Malky Mackayai??i??s only injury concern ahead of this fixture and he is unlikely to make any changes to the starting eleven that took to the field against Manchester City.

Everton have drawn their opening two games in the league, the last of which came in a frustrating 0-0 draw against West Brom. The Merseyside club lacked the cutting edge upfront and failed to break down a sturdy West Brom defence.

Roberto Martinez will still be without Antolin Alcaraz, although Darron Gibson is close to returning to full fitness. Tony Hibbert and Magaye Gueye has returned from their lay-off and joined the rest of team in training. Martinez is expected to make only one change to the team that started against West Brom. New signing Arouna Kone is expected to start ahead of Nikica Jelavic.

Prediction : Cardiff 1-1 Everton

Everton will look to come out with a more adventurous intent against Cardiff, but the home side will snatch a draw.

Players To Watch Out For ai??i??

Peter Whittingham (Cardiff), Steven Pienaar (Everton)

West Ham v Stoke City

Kevin Nolan – West Ham’s midfield hero

West Ham have made a good start to their campaign with a victory at home against Cardiff and draw at Newcastle. Sam Allardyce will be particularly pleased with the performance of his defenders. But the former Bolton manager has some injury worries ahead of this fixture.

Alou Diarra was stretchered off in the midweek game against Cheltenham and initial diagnosis suggest that he could miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury. Frontman Andy Carroll is also two weeks away from making a return to the first team. There are also concerns about left back Joey Oai??i??Brienai??i??s fitness and he is likely to miss this game against Stoke. New signing Razvan Rat is expected to start to get his first start in this game.

After a opening day loss to Liverpool, Stoke City have recovered well with a good 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace. They went behind early on in the match to goal from Marouane Chamakh, but Charlie Adam and Ryan Shawcross scored in the space of four minutes, in the second half, to give them the victory.

Unlike Sam Allardyce, Mark Hughes doesnai??i??t have any injury concern at the moment. He has a full squad to select from ahead of this fixture, although he is unlikely to make any changes to the starting eleven fielded last weekend. But Kenwyne Jones scored a wonderful hattrick in the midweek game and will stake a claim in the starting eleven.

Predictions : West Ham 2-1 Stoke City

This will be a physical battle between two sides who have similar footballing philosophy. But West Ham at home are a tough proposition for any visiting side and they should win this battle.

Players To Watch Out For ai??i??

Kevin Nolan (West Ham), Steven Nai??i??Zonzi (Stoke City)

Last Result : Stoke City 0-1 West Ham [March, 2013]

Crystal Palace v Sunderland

Emanuele Giaccherini – Sunderland’s Italian import

Before the season started experts earmarked Palace among the favourites to be relegated this season and the results in the opening two games hasnai??i??t changed any of that notion. Although to be fair to them, they did give a good performance against Stoke City last weekend, except for the period of four minutes in the second half when they conceded two goals.

But manager Ian Holloway doesnai??i??t have too many options to change things aroundAi??in the squad at the moment. In fact the former Blackpool manager is faced with a long injury list, which is certainly not helping their cause. Glenn Murray, Jerome Thomas, Yannick Bolasie, Jonathan Parr, Lewis Price and Patrick McCarthy are all out injured, which has left Holloway a thin squad to choose from. He isnai??i??t expected to make any changes to the starting eleven that was used against Stoke last weekend.

Sunderland have also made a slow start to their campaign. Despite dominating the opening game they failed to score past Fulham and conceded a goal to lose all three points. They made a good start against Southampton as well, when new signing Giaccherini gave them the lead, but Sunderland conceded a late goal and dropped two points. It is clear that all the new arrivals will need time to gel together as a team and develop the understanding of each otherai??i??s game.

Wes Brown and Phillip Bradsley is out injured, while there are still concerns about the fitness of Lee Cattermole. Stephane Sessegnon will miss this fixture after being arrested on Tuesday for drink-driving. Manager Paolo Di Canio is furious with Beninese footballer and he is expected to face disciplinary actions from the club. Sessegnonai??i??s absence means new signing Jozy Altidore will start upfront alongside Steven Fletcher.

Prediction : Crystal Palace 0-1 Sunderland

Sunderland might have had a slow start to their campaign but there is too much quality in this squad to drop points against Palace.

Players To Watch Out For ai??i??

Mile Jedinak (Crystal Palace), Emanuele Giaccherini (Sunderland)

Last Result : Sunderland 0-0 Crystal Palace [January, 2007]

Liverpool v Manchester United

Robin van Persie – Liverpool’s defence will struggle to contain the Dutchman

There always something special about a Liverpool-Manchester United fixture. These two clubs have unrivalled history in English football, and unrivalled rivalry.

Liverpool have won the opening two matches of this season, which includes two clean sheets. The have been very organised defensively, although Simon Mignolet should take much of the credit for these clean sheets. The former Sunderland custodian has already turned into a Kop hero. The Merseyside club have also looked promising in attack. The movements of the players have been fluid and Daniel Sturridge has picked up from where he left off last season.

Brendan Rodgers has some injury concerns ahead of this big game. Kolo Toure, who is looking like an astute piece of business, is out injured along with Sebastian Coates. Which means Martin Skrtel, whose future has been up for speculations this summer, will start alongside Agger. Aly Cissokho and Joe Allen will also miss out after picking up injuries during Liverpoolai??i??s midweek League Cup match. Luis Suarez will meanwhile continue to serve his suspension.

After scoring four past Swansea in their opening game, Manchester United failed to score past Chelsea last weekend. But to be fair to David Moyesai??i?? side, they looked like the only one to have to intent to win that game. Wayne Rooney started his first game of the season, after a tumultuous summer, and was the best attacking player on the pitch that night. It is looking more and more likely that Rooney will stay at Old Trafford this season and sign an extension.

David Moyes, like Brendan Rodgers, has four injury worries ahead of this game. Rafael, Hernandez, Nani, Darren Fletcher are all out injured and will miss this game. David Moyes is expected to name an unchanged side to the one that drew against Chelsea last weekend.

Prediction : Liverpool 1-1 Manchester United

Both the clubs are coming into this game on relatively similar form. United have superior quality on paper, while Liverpool have the home advantage. It is hard to separate them, hence we have decided to sit on the fence.

Players To Watch Out For ai??i??

Philippe Coutinho (Liverpool), Robin van Persie(Manchester United)

Last Result : Manchester United 2-1 Liverpool [January, 2013]

West Brom v Swansea City

Despite their opening day defeat against Southampton, West Brom gave a good account of themselves away to Everton. Steve Clarke would have been particularly pleased with his central defence pairing Jonas Olsson and Gareth McAuley. The duo were absolutely fantastic and hardly allowed Everton attackers any time or space on the ball.

But despite that good result at Merseyside, Steve Clarkeai??i??s team suffered from a massive set-back as Ben Foster picked up an injury in the game and it looks like he could be out of the game for three months. Luke Daniels will step in to the starting eleven for the time being. Foster adds to the list of long term injuries which contains the likes of George Thorne and Zoltan Gera. There are also concerns about the fitness of Matej Vydra and Steven Reid. Steve Clarke might hand over a debut start of new signing Scott Sinclair in this game.

Swansea have had a tough start to the campaign with matches against Manchester United and Tottenham in the opening two games. They currently lie at the bottom of the table, but are unlikely to stay there for long with the quality in this squad. Moreover the Welsh club will be happy about the fact that they were able prevent Tottenham from scoring any goal from open play after conceding four against United in the opening day.

Nathan Dyer and Neil Taylor are the only injury concerns for Michael Laudrup, although there are also concerns about the fitness of Ashley Williams, Jonjo Shelvey and Wilfried Bony as the trio missed out on Swanseaai??i??s Europa League clash with Petrolul. The Swansea manager is unlikely to make any changes to the line-up that faced Tottenham last week.

Prediction : West Brom 1-2 Swansea City

This will be the match when Swansea will finally open their account this season. It will be a close game, but one which the away team should win.

Players To Watch Out For ai??i??

Jonas Olssson (West Brom), Jose Canas (Swansea)

Last Result : West Brom 2-1 Swansea City [March, 2013]

Arsenal v Tottenham Hotspur

Roberto Soldado – Hoping to helping new club Tottenham beat Arsenal

After a poor start to the season Arsenal have responded and recovered well. Arsenal managed to qualify for the Champions League, and although there is still pressure on Arsene Wenger to spend in this transfer market, the win against Fulham last weekend eased a lot of pressure. But this London derby will be the litmus test of this squad and a defeat against Spurs at home might see the panic button being well and truly pressed.

Arsene Wenger has a long injury list to contend with ahead of this fixture. Mikel Arteta, Alex Oxlade Chamberlain, Abou Diaby and Thomas Vermaelen has been joined by Lukas Podolski at the side-lines after the German international picked up an injury against Fenerbahce. He is expected to be out for 10 weeks. Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey have also picked up knocks in the midweek game, but will start against Tottenham. The good news for Wenger is that Laurent Koscielny returns from suspension and will feature in the defense alongside Mertesacker, which means Jenkinson will drop to the bench while Sagna goes back to the right-back role.

Tottenham have made a fine start to the season and Andre Villas Boas will be particularly pleased with his defence as they managed to keep two clean sheets in the opening two matches. But Tottenham are yet to score a goal from open play this season and it seems the new arrivals will take time to find their feet in the league.

There are doubts about the fitness of Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Aaron Lennon ahead of this game, which means Danny Rose and Andros Townsend will retain their places, although Townsend is likely to start even if Lennon is fit after his impressive performance last week. Andre Villas Boas is expected to name an unchanged side for the North London derby, despite all the new arrivals. Lamela and Chiriches will start from the bench along with Sandro, Sigurdsson and Holtby.

Prediction : Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur

Derbies are hard to predict. Gunners have had an upper hand at the Emirates in this fixture, but Tottenham are a largely improved side this season. Expect a thrilling 2-2 draw.
