Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna is no longer the defender he was two years back, and most importantly, he doesn’t seemAi??committed to the cause. It is time the Gunners should let go of the Frenchman.
The Frenchman has had an inconsistent season so far and one which is littered with mistakes. Although it must be taken into consideration that he has returned from a long-term injury. Sagna will miss Arsenalai??i??s upcoming fixture against Aston Villa with a knee problem and is also doubtful for the match against Tottenham Hotspur that follows. It seems like time and age is catching up with the 30-year-old.
His current contract, which expires in 2014, along with his indifferent form has fuelled a lot of speculation regarding his future at the Emirates. Arsenalai??i??s contract renewal policy for players above the age of 30 has prevented them from offering a long extension to Sagna. The Frenchman is unhappy with a one year extension and is said to be evaluating his options elsewhere.
There will be no dearth of suitors for the French international as PSG and Inter are reportedly monitoring his situation at Arsenal. Despite these rumours, Arsene Wenger has defended the playerai??i??s poor form and is hopeful of securing his future at the club. The Arsenal manager also sees Sagna moving to a more central role in defence in the future.
ai???I am convinced that he will play at centre-back more often at some stage, although not yet, because he is only just 30 and certainly has three or four years left at right-back. But the fact remains Jenkinson has not only looked promising, he seemed to be more committed to the cause as well.
Wenger has defended Sagna; something he has always done for his players. But first question that arises is ai??i?? why was Sagna made to play ai???through a lot of painai??? and before he had recovered? It was not as if Jenkinson was performing badly. Sagna is no longer in his twenties, and the latest injury that could keep him out for 2-3 weeks might be a consequence of him being played even before he has recuperated. Was it worth the risk? A fully fit Jenkinson is better than a half fit Sagna.
But the most important point that Wenger has raised is about Sagnaai??i??s commitment, and one cannot help but disagree with the Frenchman on that. Injury might limit your ability but it can never dampen your commitment and Sagna looked far from being committed on the pitch. In fact at times it seemed like he has already decided to move away from the Emirates next summer.
The Frenchman has seen his team mates leave the club season after season and most importantly they have won trophies after doing so. Sagna is heading towards the fag end of his career and for the wonderful player that he has been over the years, he has nothing to show for it ai??i?? no silverware. So at this point in his career, he is perhaps justified to think about moving on.
The 30-year-old has already publicly criticized the club for selling their best players at the start of this season. Also the fact that at this age he would want one last big contract and Arsenal wonai??i??t offer him anything more than a one year extension.
If recent rumours are to be believed, Arsenal are also preparing for Sagnaai??i??s departure and the London club is closely monitoring Feyenoord right-back Daryl Janmaat. The 23-year-old is highly rated and made his international debut last year. Arsenal has close ties with the Dutch club and this move could materialize sooner rather than later.
Arsenal are expected to undergo a major overhaul next summer with the board reportedly handing over aAi??sizableAi??transfer kitty to Arsene Wenger. Arsenal need to strengthen their defense; this should be their priority in the transfer market along with a striker and a holding midfielder. The next transfer window is also the time when Arsenal should let go of Sagna, who at this age can still fetch a good transfer fee because soon he might be past his sell-by date.
