10-men Newcastle United put up a fighting performance against Liverpool at home to hold them to a 2-2 draw.
Liverpool dropped down to third place in the table as they missed the opportunity to grab all three points against 10-men Newcastle in the second half of the game. Brendan Rodgers will be disappointed with the fact that his side managed to score only one goal from open play in that game, despite having a numerical advantage.
Liverpool started well in the game, but Newcastle United slowly grew into the game and looked more threatening on possession. Liverpoolai??i??s best opportunities came from set plays in the first half, as they failed to get their game going. The home side then took the deserved lead when Yohan Cabayeai??i??s long range effort found its way into the back of the net in the 23rd minute. The Frenchman was full of confidence and caused Liverpool a lot of problems. Newcastle were the better team in the first half, but they allowed Liverpool back into the match at the stroke of half-time as Yanga-Mbiwa pulled down Suarez inside the box and received a straight red. Steven Gerrard stepped up and scored from the penalty to restore parity. It was a special moment for the Liverpool captain as he reached the milestone of 100 league goals in the Premier League for the Merseyside club.
The away side were expected to dominate Newcastle United in the second half, but once again it was the home side which took the lead as substitute Paul Dummett scored with a left footed volley from a close range. Liverpool failed to deal with a simple free kick and the ball reached the defender at the back post. Liverpool dominated possession after that and created a lot of chances, and eventually Daniel Sturridge scored the equaliser in the 72nd minute of the game. But Newcastle showed a lot of spirit and grit to contain Liverpool to just one goal in the second half and in the end grabbed a well-deserved draw.
