Amidst all the talk of who Newcastle will sign in the current January transfer window one canai??i??t help but feel that the clubai??i??s board missed an opportunity to propel the club to new heights in the summer last year. Newcastleai??i??s wafer thin squad ai??i?? a contrast of stars and downright carthorses – was never fit to meet the challenge of a sustained Europa League campaign combined with domestic commitments, and now it would appear that director Mike Ashley may be forced to pay over the odds for an emergency striker following the departure of Ba to Chelsea.
Missed opportunities aside, Newcastle do need to address some pressing concerns rather than bury their heads in the sand, imagining that theyai??i??re ai???too big to go down.ai??? Newcastle do have a better array of talent than most of their rivals in the current dogfight but they must address where the goals are going to come from, and as relevantly, they also need a player or two that exhibit the kind of guile and on-field presence that Pardew bemoaned as being missing against the likes of Everton.
This lack of guile was never more apparent than against Brighton in Newcastleai??i??s recent FA Cup exit. Alarmingly for Pardew, Brighton dominated the ball with 61% of possession against their apparently superior Premier League counterparts. The sale of Danny Guthrie in the summer always looked set to exhaust the midfield situation and shone a light on Newcastleai??i??s over-confidence in their ai???progressiveai??? transfer policy. Bigirimana, Marveaux and Anita have all stood out in recent games but the prolonged absence of Cabaye through injury means Newcastleai??i??s midfield lacks the kind of experienced presence that can dictate play and help stamp authority over weaker sides.
Pardew could go some way to putting this right without resorting to the transfer market by reinstating Gutierrez ahead of Obertan on the left wing, with the latter consistently slouching around the pitch at half pace waiting for the ball at his feet. Gutierrez may be something of a whipping boy to many fans due to his obvious lack of final product, but heai??i??s one of those midfielders that can consolidate possession in the manner of a Joe Allen or an Arteta; he draws free kicks, adds substance to the midfield, and relieves pressure in a way Obertan struggles to replicate.
It seems then that alongside a proven goalscorer, Pardew may be wise to use the window to flesh out his central midfield rather than bringing in a left winger or plugging gaps in defence with a new centre half; the arrival of Mathieu Debuchy should shore up the right side of defence which was distinctly lacking in footballing ability when inhabited by both Mike Williamson and Danny Simpson. With Debuchy on board, the on-going pursuit of Douglas from FC Twente may be best put on the back burner in favour of more pressing needs higher up the pitch (although if available, the 6ai??i??4ai??? Douglas would beef up an increasingly diminutive Newcastle side).
A crafty number 10 would be most welcome at St Jamesai??i?? but they donai??i??t come cheap. Newcastle seem to be looking to deploy a strategy more focused on the midfield now that theyai??i??ve lost Demba Ba to Chelsea and this could make Loic Remy of Marseille a decent candidate; heai??i??s a thoroughly modern final-third type footballer who can play from wide positions cutting in, or he can carry the ball through the centre of the pitch and play as a second striker behind Cisse. He offers a degree of heading ability, although his power mainly lies in fending off defenders with the ball at his feet.
Remy seems like the obvious candidate right now and represents the only star name being touted about in the press. If any other players are on Newcastleai??i??s wish list they are being kept top secret for such a narrow transfer window where the wheels of negotiation should be in motion by now.
Perhaps Pardew will decide that the reinvigorated Sylvain Marveaux is good enough to satisfy this role for now and may look for more of a battering ram type centre forward who can play with his back to goal.Ai??Pardew is partial to a long ball set piece and home games can become a shower of corners and chipped in free kicks, from which Newcastle have struggled to capitalise this season. A genuine target man to play off Cisse and exploit this direct trait could be good business and Andy Carroll will always be in the frame for a return; this will probably have to wait until the summer though.
Newcastle were relegated last time around by getting caught in the mire late on in the season, and complacently believing that they were too good for the drop. They need 20 points from their run-in to ensure safety, and without many obvious sources of goals in their arsenal, this could be more of a struggle than the abilities of their squad might suggest.
Previously the goals came predominantly from Ba and Ben Arfa with other players rarely chipping in. Now that Ba is gone, Pardew will be hoping that Cisse can recapture his former glories and Ben Arfa can stay fit ai??i?? if this isnai??i??t the case, Newcastle will be in trouble. Newcastle need to buy a proven scorer as much to lift morale as anything else, and an established marksman should guarantee that they can push over the line as well as mounting a concerted attack on the Europa League when their incumbent stars return from injury.
